The Bundesliga has traditionally been a happy hunting ground for Manchester City. In recent seasons Erling Haaland, Stefan Ortega, Josko Gvardiol and Manuel Akanji have been signed from Germany’s top flight by the world champions. Before that Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan also arrived at City from the Bundesliga. Now, another Bundesliga star, Xavi Simons, has been linked with Manchester City. There is no doubt about the talent of Simons but would he fit into the world champions squad?
Alex Roberts has reported for footballinsider247.com that Xavi Simons is emerging as a priority target for Manchester City. Roberts adds that Bayern Munich and Liverpool also have an interest in the PSG midfielder. Furthermore, Roberts adds that City views the Bundesliga star as a potential replacement for Kevin De Bruyne.
There is no doubt about the quality of Xavi Simons. The Dutch international showed his quality last season during his loan spell with RB Leipzig. He scored 10 goals and added 15 assists last campaign for RB Leipzig. Simons is currently on loan with RB Leipzig for the 24/25 season. He will be hoping to impress once again this campaign. His quality isn’t in doubt, nor is his potential, but would he fit into City’s squad? That’s a different discussion entirely.
First of all Xavi Simons is a versatile player who can play in a variety of positions. He is capable of playing on either wing or as a number 10. He has shown that capability both with RB Leipzig and during his appearances for the Dutch national team. Pep Guardiola typically likes players in his squad who can play in a variety of positions. Simons ticks that box.
But would there be a position in City’s squad for Xavi Simons next summer? That is the bigger question. Manchester City look to be well-stocked for wide men. If Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva or another midfielder depart the champions next summer there could be an opening in City’s squad for a player like Xavi Simons. But that scenario is someway off just yet.
It is no surprise to see that Xavi Simons is reportedly a target for Manchester City. He is another one of the nost highly regarded young players in football. But a potential City move for Simons is a long way off. There’s too many variables at play that will determine if the champions move for the PSG midfielder in the future.
