Annamayya district Superintendent of Police V. Vidyasagar Naidu has said that stringent action will be taken against illegal activities such as rooster fights, gambling, and other unsocial conduct during the Sankranti celebrations.
In a media briefing on Friday (January 10, 2025), Mr. Vidyasagar Naidu said that those involved in organising rooster fights, poker, gundata, or chakka bomma would face legal repercussions.
He said that such activities, often presented as traditional sports, can be detrimental as they promote gambling habits.
“People squander their hard-earned money in rooster fights and gambling to make easy money. This disrupts the family’s financial stability and contributes to social problems,” he said.
The SP said that habitual offenders including those with a history of involvement in cockfights, producing chicken knives, and gambling have been bound over.
The police have intensified surveillance to check such illegal activities.
Mr. Naidu also highlighted the lasting consequences for the youth engaged in these activities. “Young individuals involved in these illegal activities jeopardise their future. A criminal record can pose significant barriers to obtaining passports, government jobs, or international opportunities,” he said.
The SP urged the people to report any occurrences of rooster fights or gambling by reaching out to their nearest police station or calling 100/ 112.
The SP observed that the anonymity of informants would be protected to ensure their safety.
“Let’s celebrate Sankranti in a responsible manner, valuing our traditional games and customs instead of partaking in unlawful activities,” he advised.
