The ATP calendar is often a big topic of conversation with players often critical of how much tennis they have to play.
Recently the ATP have removed a tournament after announcing that their calendar for the 2026 season.
Despite usually being a positive player, Carlos Alcaraz has criticized the tennis calendar with some strong words last year.
It is not just current players that have been critical, with former players also calling for the ATP to make changes.
Former world number one Andy Roddick has jumped in on this issue, particularly highlighting the Davis Cup as a problem.
Roddick, who won the Davis Cup with the USA in 2007, played the competition in its previous format that was fully home-and-away ties.
This meant that only two nations would be part of the final weekend that would take place at the end of the season.
However, the new Davis Cup format that has been heavily criticized since it changed to having an eight team finals in 2019.
The Davis Cup have made a U-turn towards its original format after adding more home-and-away ties in 2025, but still have the finals to conclude the season.
When speaking on his podcast, Roddick was critical about the Davis Cup and the impact it is having on players.
“Why is the ATP? Why is it their responsibility to carve up their calendar for Davis Cup?” questioned Roddick. “Now Davis Cup has done this. We are still carving out weeks during the ATP schedule as Davis Cup weeks.
“We used to have two teams which got screwed by Davis Cup being so late. But the upside was one of those teams could win the Davis Cup, it was a no brainer. We won it and I wasn’t even thinking about Australia yet, all I wanted to do was win Davis Cup.
“Now we have all the teams that qualify for finals playing as late in the year as possible. And we are still giving them weeks in the calendar! So we have screwed more people over, everyone is playing longer.”
The first round of Davis Cup qualifiers contained more controversy, that was particularly heightened in the tie between Belgium beat Chile.
As the controversy begins to blow over, the competition looks ahead to its next set of qualifiers that include 14 nations.
They will take place in a best-of-five rubber format, with only one location sorted for these ties as of yet.
These Davis Cup qualifier ties take place over the weekend of September 12-14, with the winners joining host nation and defending champions Italy for the finals in Bologna at the end of the year.
