Andy Murray names the player he cannot wait to see Joao Fonseca face on the ATP Tour after he reaches the final in Argentina
Joao Fonseca has continued his stunning rise by reaching the Argentina Open final, where he takes on Francisco Cerundolo.
Fonseca made his top 100 debut after his superb Australian Open run, with the Brazilian climbing from 112th place to 99th.
The 18-year-old soared through qualifying in Melbourne before a first round victory over ninth seed Andrey Rublev, with Carlos Alcaraz well aware of Fonseca’s potential.
Fonseca then fell in the second round to Lorenzo Sonego, but has bounced back superbly by storming his way to a first ATP final.
The teenager meets fifth seed and home favourite Cerundolo for the Argentina Open trophy, having already beaten a number of Argentines at the event.

Fonseca took out eighth seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry in round one, before also beating Federico Coria and Mariano Navone.
A semi-final victory was then secured against Serbian Laslo Djere, with his run having caught the eye of former world number one Andy Murray.

The three-time Grand Slam champion is, however, still waiting for a Fonseca versus Alcaraz clash, with Murray writing on X: “Can’t wait for the first Fonseca vs Alcaraz match.”

Fonseca has been catching the eye since emerging victorious at the NextGen ATP Finals in December, where he beat Learner Tien to lift the trophy.
He took no time at all to triumph after that run in Jeddah, with the Brazilian not dropping a set on his way to winning the Canberra Challenger.

The 18-year-old now boasts 18 wins in his last 20 matches at all levels, with another title now on the cards.
Fittingly, Fonseca is the youngest finalist on clay since Alcaraz in 2021, where the Spanish star won in Umag.
Remarkably, that was the year that Alcaraz won the NextGen ATP Finals title, overcoming American Sebastian Korda in the final to lift the trophy.
Given their potential to go far at many events in 2025, a first-ever ATP Tour meeting between the Brazilian and the Spaniard looks certain to take place this season.
