Sloane Stephens’ poor form continues after she suffered defeat at the Merida Open.
The 31-year-old’s level of play is currently a long way from the player who won the 2017 US Open and reached the 2018 French Open semi-finals.
Her results of late are unbecoming of a Grand Slam winner and former top 10 player, and she tried to change her fortunes at the Merida Open.
This was Stephens’ first tournament since the Australian Open and it was over before it even truly began.
Sloane Stephens at her best is one of the most consistent and cleanest ball-strikers on tour, who possesses great athleticism.
But she has been far from her best over the last several months, and that was illustrated during her most recent match on the WTA Tour.
The former World number three took on Petra Martic to begin her campaign, and she suffered a disappointing 2-6, 3-6 defeat.
As a result, Stephens suffered her 10th successive defeat, with her last victory coming at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships in July.
During that stretch, she has won just two out of 20 sets, further highlighting her alarming run of form and he ranking has fallen to 115.
At the Merida Open Stephens succumbed to defeat once again, and fans were bitterly disappointed.
This was her first match against the Croatian since 2019 and Stephens was unbeaten in each of their previous three meetings until Tuesday’s clash.
Fans took to social media platform X to voice their views over Stephens’ performance. “I don’t know how Sloane Stephens won a Grand Slam. The most inconsistent player ever,” one wrote.
“Another user posted: “Sloane Stephens won a title last year and has been absolutely terrible since,” while this fan said: “Sloane Stephens is finished, she’s won only 2 matches in 10 months.”
