Paul, ranked No 11, will face the winner of the match between Frenchman Ugo Humbert, the No 14 seed, and German Alexander Zverev, the second seed, next.
Earlier in the tournament, the American defeated Australian Christopher O’Connell (6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 7-5), Japanese Kei Nishikori (6-7 (3), 6-0, 6-3, 6-1) and Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena (7-6, 6-2, 6-0).
Davidovich Fokina, ranked No 66, beat Chinese Juncheng Shang (7-6 (1), 5-2 ret.), Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 29 seed (6-7 (7), 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-1, 6-3) and Jakub Mensik (3-6, 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4, 6-2) in the previous rounds of the first Grand Slam tournament in 2025.
