Alex Van Pelt’s first and only season as the New England Patriots offensive coordinator obviously did not go well.
But that didn’t discourage Rams head coach Sean McVay from bringing Van Pelt onto the Los Angeles coaching staff. The Rams announced Monday that Van Pelt joined the team as a senior offensive assistant.
Van Pelt’s two decades on an NFL sideline, plus nine seasons as a backup quarterback in the league, surely helped him land the gig. He got his start in coaching in 2006 with the Buffalo Bills and served as the team’s offensive coordinator in 2009. Van Pelt then bounced around from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Green Bay Packers and Cincinnati Bengals, mostly coaching quarterbacks.
Van Pelt did serve as as the Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator for four seasons, but showed he was overmatched for the job with the Patriots. New England’s offense ranked 31st in yards and 30th in points under Van Pelt’s watch.
But Van Pelt did get credit for developing Drake Maye, who showed signs he could become a franchise quarterback for the Patriots. And Maye, on more than one occasion, backed the work Van Pelt did.

“I think, AVP, what he’s done for me this year and what he’s done for my development has been huge for me,” Maye said in an interview with WEEI in December. “… And I credit AVP and (quarterbacks coach) T.C. (McCartney) and the quarterback room for helping me prepare every week. … And I really respect that and appreciate (them). They’ve really taken a chance on me, along with the rest of the franchise.”
The Patriots replaced Van Pelt with a familiar face in Josh McDaniels, who will now be tasked with getting New England’s offense back on track and helping Maye reach his potential.
