Kalen DeBoer is getting the band back together. Alabama football is bringing on Ryan Grubb as offensive coordinator, sources with knowledge of the hiring told AL.com.
The move reunites DeBoer with the man who helped him bring Washington to the national championship game in 2023. Yea Alabama, Alabama’s NIL collective, announced the hire in a Sunday release.
DeBoer had not ruled out the possibility when asked about it during a media availability at the Senior Bowl.
“We go way back,” DeBoer said Tuesday in Mobile. “Great friend of mine. Think the world of him as a football coach, obviously as a person too. And so, I know he’s working through his process, just kind of after what last season brought, so just gotta see what he does there and (I’m) here for him whenever he needs me. That’s always going to be the case.”
When DeBoer left the Huskies to join Alabama after Nick Saban retired in January of 2024, Grubb initially followed. However, he then decided to remain in Seattle, taking the OC job with the NFL’s Seahawks.
After one season, Grubb was fired by the Seahawks. That move opened the door to reunite with DeBoer in Tuscaloosa.
After Grubb headed back to Seattle, Nick Sheridan was promoted to Alabama’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. The release did not mention his future.
Grubb first worked for DeBoer at Sioux Falls in 2007. The two also worked together at Eastern Michigan and Fresno State, before going to Washington in 2022.
Now back in Tuscaloosa, in a job he first interviewed for ahead of the 2023 season, when Saban was still in charge, Grubb will have work to do. Alabama’s offense was inconsistent throughout DeBoer’s first season, leading to the Crimson Tide’s first season with less than 10 wins since 2007.
He’ll immediately have a quarterback battle on his hands, with Jalen Milroe’s departure for the NFL Draft. Ty Simpson, Austin Mack and Keelon Russell will be the major players in the QB room this offseason
