Akron native Maverick Carter consulting with investors about potential NBA rival league
Akron native Maverick Carter is consulting an investment group regarding the establishment of a new international basketball league, according to a Bloomberg News report. The league would serve as a rival to the NBA.
The group reportedly wants to start with six men’s teams and six women’s teams. The investors consist of a number of private equity firms.
Carter has been at LeBron James’ side since their days at St. Vincent-St. Mary as friends and business partners. But James, according to the report, would have no role.
Upstart sports leagues are nothing new in the realm of professional sports.
The NFL had its wannabe rivals – World Football League, American Football League and the first inception of the USFL – and the NBA had to contend with the American Basketball Association in the 1970s.
