Al Ahly coach Marcel Koller has confirmed Percy Tau’s next move, ending speculation on his future. Following recent speculation about the Bafana Bafana forward’s departure from the Egyptian giants, Koller has revealed that Tau’s Ahly exit has now been finalised.
The 30-year-old joined the 12-time African champions, Al Ahly, in August 2021. He was signed by then-coach Pitso Mosimane from Brighton & Hove Albion, where he had struggled to consistently find his best form.
The Swiss mentor confirmed Tau had not travelled to Abidjan, Ivory Coast, with Ahly as he was on his way out of the club.
“The player is no longer in the team’s ranks. He has moved to one of the Qatari teams,” Koller said. Tau is poised to join Qatar SC, pending a medical.
Qatari newspaper Al-Sharq reported that the former Mamelodi Sundowns star has arrived in Doha, Qatar. He is set to undergo a medical examination at Aspetar Hospital for Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine on Saturday, January 11, 2025.
According to reports, the Qatar club paid US$450 000 [about R8.5 million] for the services of the Witbank-born star. Tau was left with six months on his Ahly contract, which expires in June 2025.
Tau enjoyed considerable success during his time at Ahly, amassing a significant trophy haul. He won two CAF Champions League titles, two Egyptian League championships, and four Egyptian Super Cups.
He also added the CAF Super Cup and the Egyptian Cup to his collection, surpassing ten trophies overall. The former CAF Interclub Player of the Year featured 126 times for Ahly, scoring 30 goals and providing 14 assists.
Tau has played 15 times for Al Ahly in the current season, scoring three goals, all of which were in the CAF Champions League.
