After avoiding them in league’s infancy, LIV Golf taking on PGA Tour’s top events in 2025
Three years ago, LIV Golf kicked off its initial eight-event invitational series while saying it wasn’t going to host events opposite of the PGA Tour’s heritage tournaments, like the Memorial and Arnold Palmer Invitational.
The same held true for the league in 2023 when it moved to 14 events for its first full season. In 2024, that philosophy changed, and LIV Golf held four tournaments the same week as the PGA Tour’s signature events.
In 2025, the league is being even more bullish, going up against both of the PGA Tour’s biggest events and numerous signature events. It’s a scheduling approach that shows LIV Golf is doing what it believes its best for its growth moving forward, regardless of what else is going on in the golf calendar.
The first four events of the LIV Golf schedule are the same dates as two signature events and the PGA Tour’s flagship tournament, though they’ll be contested on the opposite side of the globe and not directly go head-to-head. When the FedEx Cup Playoffs roll around, LIV Golf has an event the same three weeks, all in the United States, including its Individual and Team Championships.
The offseason was a quiet one on the player side, with no notable names leaving the PGA Tour to join LIV Golf for the first time since its inception. However, with a new CEO, elevated TV deal and revisioned scheduling philosophy, LIV Golf is taking a different and aggressive approach to go head-to-head against the PGA Tour in 2025, begging the question of whether the framework agreement between the two leagues is close to being completed.
