After Sunday’s loss to the Dolphins, the Patriots now lead the race for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, according to Tankathon.
New England, which has lost four straight after beating Cincinnati in the season opener, joins five other teams (Cincinnati, Jacksonville, Cleveland, LA Rams, and Carolina) with a 1-4 record.
However, the Patriots have had the weakest strength of schedule among those teams, putting them at the top of the Tankathon standings.
New England has two of the teams they are currently tied with left on their schedule. They will take on the Jaguars in London on Oct. 20, and they will host the Rams at Gillette Stadium on Nov. 17.
They’ll also play the Titans, who are the NFL’s only 1-3 team at the moment, on Nov. 3.
If the Patriots get a top-5 pick this year, it will be the first time since 1994 the franchise has had top-5 selections back to back. New England took quarterback Drew Bledsoe No. 1 overall in 1993 and linebacker Willie McGinest No. 4 overall in 1994.
New England also had consecutive top-5 picks in 1970 and 1971, taking defensive tackle Phil Olsen and quarterback Jim Plunkett.
The Patriots started off 1-5 last season before finishing 4-13 and landing the No. 3 overall pick which they used to select quarterback Drake Maye.
Maye was the Patriots’ first top-10 selection since the Patriots drafted linebacker Jerod Mayo No. 10 overall in 2008. Mayo is now the head coach of the team.
The Patriots’ four-game losing streak is the longest in the NFL this season.
