New York Governor Kathy Hawkul has signed a new law, S1550/A1118, in response to the city’s growing public concern about the prevalence of gambling addiction. The law requires stronger warnings in gambling and sports betting advertisements. It requires that all gambling-related advertising, including mobile sports betting ads, clearly warn about the consequences of gambling that can harm the player.
Of course, rules regarding gambling advertising already exist, but this move will significantly expand them. Previously, they were insufficient—New York only required the display of a gambling hotline number, and online gambling was not covered by the rules.
The law also requires the New York State Gambling Commission to cooperate with the Commissioner of Addiction Services and Supports. This cooperation assures that all gambling-related advertising will display a hotline for help with gambling problems.
According to the governor’s press release, the law’s primary goal is to ensure New Yorkers can safely enjoy their favorite pastimes while exercising caution when necessary. It will also provide them with easier access to resources that help players protect themselves from the risks of addiction.
Interestingly, the passage of this law coincides with a period when the gambling industry thrived in New York. After a 2013 constitutional amendment authorized commercial casinos, the state quickly expanded its gambling offerings. The specific legislation, however, remains uncertain.
A new era of gaming opened in 2018 with the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the federal ban on sports betting. In 2022, online betting became legal in New York. Mobile sports betting quickly became a significant source of revenue for the state, and New York became the largest sports betting market in the country.
It is especially noticeable today, as the state’s residents are actively betting via the Internet. And it is not just soccer or baseball, but also less popular sports, including cricket. Many of them make bets directly from their phones during the matches. They use convenient bookmaker apps, which can be easily found online. If you explore the Google search results leader, Cricketbettingapps, you can find cricket betting apps with minimum deposit and install them on your phone in just a few seconds. Registering and replenishing your account won’t take more than a minute. Such simplicity has attracted thousands of state residents to betting.
The US is not on the list of countries where gambling has become a national pastime. But if this continues, this list may be enlarged. After all, Americans have great financial opportunities for active betting.
