Aaron Rodgers could be playing his final NFL game Sunday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Rodgers, who’s about to wrap up his second season with the New York Jets, previously hinted at retirement and this could be it for the future Hall of Famer. It’s been a disappointing season to say the least for the Jets, who are 4-12 going into the final game.
Rodgers said in recent weeks that this could be it, but he’s going to take time to decide before free agency, and of course, evaluate the new regime coming into New York.
“Today could be the very last NFL game for Aaron Rodgers,” Schefter said on SportsCenter. “He says he’ll decide his future, before free agency in March, he sounded like a man this past week talking about the idea of retiring like this could very well be his last game. Of course, it’s very difficult to predict what somebody who has a documentary after him named Enigma is going to do ultimately a couple of months from now, but the fact of the matter is, it is possible that this will be his last NFL game.
“He has 499 career (touchdown) passes, one short of 500 sure he’ll get that today against the Dolphins, and that may be the way that Aaron Rodgers goes out and starts the clock on his time to Canton five years from his last game.”
The future Hall of Famer has had his moments this year, but not nearly enough to break the Jets’ playoff drought.
It simply sounds like Rodgers needs a mental break after the Achilles rehab in 2023 and a challenging 2024.
“I need a break mentally,” Rodgers said, via Zack Rosenblatt. “I don’t want to make a decision until I’ve been able to rest mentally and physically … I just need a break to refresh, put my feet in the sand and see where I’m at after that.
“March is free agency, I don’t think we’re going to get that far because there’s going to be a regime change here with the GM and then I’ll either get a call or have a conversation and go from there.”
Following the 2-2 start, the Jets are just 2-10 since. Rodgers has had his struggles this season, but quietly put together a decent statistical season. That was until a brutal start against the Buffalo Bills last weekend, throwing for just 112 yards and two interceptions.
This year, Rodgers has 3,623 yards, 24 touchdowns, 10 interceptions and a 63% completion percentage.
