Aaron Rodgers reacts to Jordan Love’s record NFL contract
Jordan Love, Aaron Rodgers‘ one-time understudy with the Packers, became the highest-paid player in NFL history Friday night. And Rodgers wasted no time in congratulating his fellow quarterback.
Rodgers made an appearance on NFL Network Saturday afternoon after Jets practice. And of course, Love’s humongous deal, came up in conversation.
“I want to give a shoutout to Jordan Love becoming the highest paid player in the NFL,” Rodgers told hosts Brian Baldinger and Judy Battista.
“J-Love, don’t spend it all in one place. But if you do, I still have a house in Green Bay up for sale.”
Actually, Love said that Rodgers got in contact with him Friday night, after news broke about Love’s new contract. The Packers agreed to pay Love $55 million a year with a $75 million signing bonus.
So about Rodgers’ home in Green Bay. The Packers quarterback said he’s not interested in that particular piece of real estate.
“Somebody will buy it, but probably not me,” Love told reporters after the Packers finished practice, Saturday.
Love reported for his first training camp practice, Saturday. He had been holding out until the Packers finished his new agreement. However, the contract never appeared to be in doubt. It was a matter of when it got done.
The only quarterback remaining who could top Love’s deal is Dak Prescott. The Cowboys quarterback is entering his final year of his contract. Dallas owner Jerry Jones is dealing with contracts of his three most dynamic players — Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons.
But Friday was a big day for new contracts. Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa said yes to an agreement earlier in the day with the numbers coming in at $53.1 million a year. He fell right below the $55 million crowd of Joe Burrow, Love and Trevor Lawrence and just above Jared Goff.
The quarterback market is sizzling and in a constant reset. The Packers quarterback, who has started for only one season, is tops because he was the most recent quarterback to sign a deal. Consider that Patrick Mahomes, with his three Super Bowl rings, is now tied with Kirk Cousins for 10th at $45 million a season.
Rodgers was the highest-paid in the NFL back in 2022, when he and the Packers agreed to a three-year deal that paid him $50.27 million a season. By then, he’d been with the Packers for 17 years, with a Super Bowl win and four NFL MVP trophies.
Rodgers, 40, is practicing again with the Jets as he seeks a comeback from his Achilles injury that ended his year last September in New York’s season opener.
