Gavin Wheeler, a 2023 Merrimack Valley graduate, was named Newcomer of the Year for the Skidmore College men’s soccer team. Skidmore earned a third place finish in the Liberty League Conference with a 6-4-7 record, earning program-record 17 conference points. After a first round win over Ithaca, Skidmore’s season ended with a 2-1 double overtime loss to St. Lawrence. Wheeler played in 12 games for the Thoroughbreds, starting the final six. Wheeler played almost 700 minutes as a first-year player.
The Concord boys’ freshmen basketball team lost its season opener to Bishop Guertin, 44-36. The Crimson Tide battled and exchanged leads throughout the game, with Matthias Eastwood (eight points) and Kushal Chhetri (seven points) leading the scoring. Playing well defensively was Ethan Harmon.
■The Hopkinton JV girls’ basketball team beat Somersworth, 41-8. The Hawks were led by seven points from Zoey Freitas, six points from Ellie Collins and five points each from Molly Kerr, Caroline Chehade and Gemma Guadagno. Every Hawk got in the scoring column.
The Hopkinton Middle School girls’ basketball team improved to 4-0 with victories over Hillsboro-Deering (42-17) and Concord Christian (31-20) last week. The Hawks did not allow any points in the opening quarter, and Carly Yale (10 points), Elli Gregory (10 points) and Jacey Marchand (nine points) led Hopkinton’s scoring against H-D. Against Concord Christian, Marchand (eight points), Brylee Chase (six points) and Gregory (six points) led the scoring. Hopkinton did not allow any third-quarter points, outscoring Concord Christian 18-5 in the second half to pull away.
