Many Floridians are aware that it is not uncommon for Publix stores to rehabilitate old stores with new amenities and designs. The Briar Bay Publix across the street from The Falls in South Florida’s Kendall will soon reopen after being demolished for refurbishment. However, North Floridians are also getting a new Publix and it isn’t refurbished. It is brand new and in a new shopping center.
About Sweet Bay Town Center: This new shopping center in Panama City will sit on 9.7 acres which used to be the main runway of the old Bay County Airport. It broke ground in November of 2023. Although the shopping center will serve the Sweet Bay community, everyone can use it. In addition to Publix, there will be restaurants, a hotel, a yoga studio, a Starbucks, and a medical office.
The Opening Of The New Publix: The anchor Publix at Sweet Bay Shopping Center will be approximately 48,387 square feet and have a liquor store. The Publix will also have a balcony with an interior area associated with it which is unique to Sweet Bay.
According to a Facebook post by Publix announcing the grand opening of February 26, 2025, the first 1,000 people will receive a free reusable bag.
SweetBay resident Kathy Donnelly is happy about the new addition, telling MyPandhandle:
“It will be convenient for us, for everyone living here after work, if they need anything, they can just run right over to Publix.”
In a Facebook post by Sweet Bay asking what type of businesses residents might want to see in the town center, some people mentioned Trader Joe’s and nail salons.
