BLAIR COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — It’s that time of year when people are staying inside, with less physical activity for the winter, but for one senior citizen in Blair County, he has a totally different mindset by having fun while playing one of the nation’s most popular sports.
If you’re not one of the millions already playing pickleball, certainly you’ve probably heard about it.
One of the benefits is that there’s practically no age limit on who can play.
“It’s very good exercise. It’s good for your flexibility and keeps you sharp.”
Richard Hoban is 88 years young, and the Navy veteran plays pickleball six days a week, at the Hollidaysburg YMCA.
As he terms it, he’s having fun with a good group of people.
“There’s competition, but it’s not cutthroat. They’re very pleasant. There’s no arguing and it’s just a good time.”
Hoban moves around the court pretty well and jokes about his athletic prowess.
“I didn’t get a good looking body, but I got a good functioning body.”
Hoban used to be an avid racquetball player, then switched to pickleball as it come with a little less stress and exertion, but is still good exercise. He says his military background is beneficial, not only here, but in everyday life to provide a sense of purpose.
“I don’t like to give advice to people. As long as you can keep your mind focused and keep a level of activity going that is important to you. That’s how things should go.”
