21 Colorado jobs lost as REI ends Experiences programs

REI Co-op is shutting down its Experiences programs, including in the Fort Collins area, the outdoor gear retailer confirmed to the Coloradoan on Tuesday.

The company announced the end of its Experiences business — which included adventure travel, day tours and classes — Jan. 8, citing its failure to turn a profit, according to a statement from REI President and CEO Eric Artz.

As part of the shutdown, 180 full-time jobs and 248 part-time guide jobs were eliminated, Artz said. Among those, 21 employees in Colorado were impacted, according REI spokesperson Megan Behrbaum.

Artz’s letter noted that, among other offerings to impacted employees, full-time employees would receive their regular salary through March 9 and benefits through the end of March, while part-time employees are eligible to receive benefits through the end of January and are eligible for a severance payment.

While all outdoor classes, day tours and REI Adventures trips are permanently canceled, REI Adventures and Wilderness First Aid courses currently in progress will continue until they’re completed, according to the REI website.

In-store workshops, presentations and events will also continue and can be viewed online.
