Tom Kim wanted to make a change, and it paid dividends at the 2025 Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
The 22-year-old switched to the Scotty Cameron Studio Style Newport 2 this week. He debuted the putter during his TGL match on Monday, where his Jupiter Links GC team defeated Boston Common Golf. Kim poured in putts from everywhere on the artificial turf and kept the flat stick hot at Pebble Beach.
Kim gained 3.30 shots on the greens during Friday’s round of 65, per Data Golf, and he followed that up by picking up 0.48 shots on the green in the third round to put himself in contention entering Sunday.
“Just back to a blade, something that I’ve putted well with,” Kim said of his putter change on Friday. “You know, I think mallet, blade, they both have their positives and they both have their negatives. I just felt like I needed something a little bit more consistent and something that I’ve won with.
“It’s not exactly the same blade that I’ve been using, it’s a little different. But I think transitioning from the mallet — some of my lines, I started to really like a different type of line than I used to. Just kind of little adjustments. And obviously the new face that they came out with is really nice, so it’s been working well so far.”
Kim started the day two shots back of leader Sepp Straka but hoped that his red-hot putter would carry him to a Signature Event win and the $3.6 million check that comes with it. However, Rory McIlroy played a near-flawless round of golf to win his 27th career PGA Tour event.
