This week, in no particular order, all but one winner of the Wyndham Championship was in line to receive:
— Cash, and we’ll get to that more in a sec;
— A trophy;
— Five-hundred FedEx Cup points, which are crucial at this time of year, with the PGA Tour playoffs starting next week;
— A two-year Tour exemption and invites into next year’s Masters, U.S. Open, PGA Championship, Players Championship and Tournament of Champions;
— A congrats from Aaron Rai.
A congrats from Aaron Rai?
It’s true. The 29 year-old Englishman has made a habit of offering well-wishes to champions. His motivation, he said Saturday, was simple.
“Whether it’s me that wins or whether it’s someone else that wins,” he said, “there’s a huge amount of work that goes into it and it’s an amazing journey that every single player is on. When that culminates in a victory, whether that’s the first victory or multiple victories, it’s very special for whoever that it is. I think everyone who’s playing on the Tour can appreciate how difficult it is to win and how difficult it is to even get to this stage.
“Yeah, taking an extra few minutes to congratulate someone is not too much of an ask.”
With that, Rai’s victory late Sunday no doubt will make him a popular winner. Here is the complete payout breakdown for this week’s Wyndham Championship, played at Sedgefield Country Club — with the figures from sixth place and lower to be determined after Matt Kuchar finishes his final round on Monday.
