The U.S. women’s basketball team is back in action on Sunday to wrap up group play, and Noah Lyles will attempt to win a medal in the men’s 100-meter as track and field action continues at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Oh, and there’s an incredible tennis final between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic on tap in what should be a great day of action in France.
Here’s what we’re looking forward to most on Sunday in Paris.
It’s time for another battle between two of the top tennis players in the world. Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic will square off Sunday in the singles gold medal match at Roland Garros. At 21, Alcaraz is now the youngest to ever compete for an Olympic gold on the men’s side while Djokovic, 37, is the oldest.
This will mark the seventh matchup between the two stars, and the first since Alcaraz beat Djokovic in straight sets to claim the Wimbledon title last month. Alcaraz has yet to drop a single set in the tournament.
The men’s 100-meter final is set for Sunday afternoon, and American Noah Lyles is right in the mix for a medal despite a rough preliminary day on Saturday. Lyles finished his heat in second place which, while enough to move him into the semifinals, was his slowest run in more than a year.
The semifinals for the 100-meter will start at 2 p.m. ET, and if he makes it through the final will start just before 4 p.m.
The individual apparatus finals continue in gymnastics with the uneven bars. Suni Lee is the only American qualified for Sunday’s final. She took bronze in the event at the Tokyo Olympics and will look to collect another medal in Paris.
The U.S. will have one last shot at trying to catch Australia in swimming golds in these Olympics. Australia swimmers enter the day with seven golds to USA’s six.
American Gretchen Walsh will go for gold in the 50-meter freestyle, and the U.S. will also have a shot at winning both the men’s and women’s 4×100 medley relay races to cap the night.
The U.S. women’s basketball team will wrap up group play on Sunday with a matchup against Germany, which will also enter the matchup with a perfect 2-0 record so far in France. Team USA has already clinched a quarterfinal berth after they beat Belgium on Thursday, which marked their 57th consecutive Olympics win. That streak dates back to 1992.
Germany has also secured a quarterfinals berth already, so Sunday’s game isn’t a must-win for either side. But with the win streak and seeding for the knockout stage on the line, a 3-0 start in pool play would be huge for the Americans on their quest to another gold medal.
The final round of the men’s golf tournament kicks off on Sunday morning outside of Paris, and Xander Schauffele is in a great spot to defend his gold medal.
The reigning British Open winner holds a share of the lead with Spain’s Jon Rahm at 14-under entering the final round. Great Britain’s Tommy Fleetwood will start just a shot back in third. Both Ireland’s Rory McIroy and USA’s Scottie Scheffler are within striking distance, too, though they’ll start the day four shots back.
The final round will start at 3 a.m. ET and can be seen on the Golf Channel.
