There’s not a lot to be critical of when you’re talking about a unanimous Rookie of the Year winner who just helped lead Team France to a silver medal in the Olympics. It’s safe to say that the San Antonio Spurs are thrilled with everything Victor Wembanyama has done so far in his short career. He’s, no doubt, going to add to his game as much as possible before the start of the new season, but there are only two months left before the opening night tip-off.
The commitment to the Olympics took up a large chunk of time, and the experience was valuable in its own right. There’s a lot to be learned from competing at a level that high, but as Wembanyama looks to add some tools to his game, there is one area, in particular, that he should ensure he’s focusing on.
Chris Paul is going to help with this once they get into training camp and the games start, but it’s something Vic should start working on as soon as possible. Due to his slender frame, players are doing their work early, getting physical with him, and cutting off his path, so he can’t get the ball in advantageous positions. There needs to be a counter to that.
Whether he can add a bit of muscle or work on using his quickness and opponent’s leverage against them, it needs to be a high priority. His teammates will also have to get him the ball on time—something else CP3 excels at and can help the others learn—but much of the responsibility to make himself available is up to him. If he can improve this part of his game, his efficiency can skyrocket, and all of a sudden, you’re looking at a 26-point-per-game scorer in his sophomore season.
