A woman from Zimmerman was recently charged with a variety of gambling-related offenses following a months-long investigation by state authorities.
Betsy Ann Morine was accused of running illegal gambling activities online from her home, court documents state.
In July 2023, the Minnesota Gambling Control Board received a complaint in regard to a Facebook account under the name “Betsy Morine” for the gambling activity, which kickstarted the investigation.
According to court documents, posts on the Facebook account allegedly promoted unregistered pull-tabs and other gambling activities including bingo for an approximately eight-month period of time.
A special agent from the Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement office reviewed the account and discovered multiple posts advertising bingo games and pull-tabs encouraging players to send payments through the Venmo and Cash App money exchange apps, court documents report.
It was determined that Morine ran at least 29 live-streamed gambling sessions between April and November 2023.
Authorities conducted a search of Morine’s residence in December 2024, when officers located boxes of unstamped pull-tabs, bingo equipment and other gambling materials, court documents state.
Financial records of Morine’s reported in court documents detailed that from March to November 2023, her Venmo account received approximately $51,000 in transactions, with nearly $43,000 paid out and $13,500 withdrawn.
According to court documents, in a post-Miranda statement, Morine admitted to running the operation for additional income.
Morine faces one charge for selling or possessing unstamped gambling materials, a felony level charge. She also faces four misdemeanor charges: one charge of maintaining a gambling operation, one for participating in gambling income, one for conducting a lottery and one for collecting proceeds from illegal gambling activities.
Morine faces up to five years in prison, a $10,000 fine or both in relation to the five charges.
A summons has been issued for her to appear in court.
