The Ragin’ Cajuns are 6-1 on the year, but they’re four-point road underdogs in this Sun Belt clash against the Bobcats. And that’s despite Texas State coming off a 24-14 loss to Old Dominion, while Louisiana is coming off a 34-24 win over Coastal Carolina. But the Bobcats had won two straight before that, and they have some offensive threats to watch, including senior QB Jordan McCloud (1,891 passing yards and 20 touchdowns against seven interceptions with a 68.5 percent completion rate) and junior running back Ismail Mahdi (646 rushing yards and two touchdowns, 5.3 yards per carry).
For the Ragin’ Cajuns, senior quarterback Ben Wooldridge has thrown for 1,785 yards and 15 touchdowns (with four interceptions and a 69.6 percent completion mark). His top target is tight end Terrance Carter, who has 29 catches for 465 yards and four touchdowns. They also have a pair of talented running backs, Bill Davis (509 rushing yards and three touchdowns, 6.4 yards per carry) and Zylan Perry (376 rushing yards and one touchdown, 6.6 yards per carry). We’ll see how they do against the Texas State defense, which allows a middle-of-the-FBS 136.9 rushing yards per game.

The home Flames (5-1) are coming off their only loss of the year, to previously-winless Kennesaw State (which was the first FBS win for the Owls, who are also in action Wednesday night against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers) last Wednesday. That loss likely means Liberty is out of the College Football Playoff picture, with only one berth reserved for the top-ranked Group of Five team. (At the moment, 6-1 Boise State is No. 15 in the AP poll, while 7-0 Army is also ranked at No. 22, and Memphis, Tulane, Navy, and Louisiana all received votes. The first CFP rankings come out next week.)
But the Flames still have some hope if all of those Group of Five teams ahead of them stumble, and if they’re able to put together a string of impressive performances down the stretch. And at the least, they could be in contention for a prominent bowl. To get there, they’ll need strong play out of QB Kaidon Salter (who posted 206 passing yards and three touchdowns last week against Kennesaw State, and also ran nine times for 87 yards, but completed just 55 percent of his passes and threw a pick) and RB Quinton Cooley (who has 582 yards and six touchdowns with a 6.4 yards per carry average on the season, but got just nine carries for 37 yards last week).
Meanwhile, Jacksonville State (2.5-point underdogs) will counter with dual-threat QB Tyler Huff, who’s thrown for 1,406 yards and eight touchdowns (with four interceptions and a 65.1 per cent completion mark) and rushed 94 times for 654 yards (7.0 yards per carry) and eight touchdowns. They also have a strong RB in Tre Stewart, who has 682 yards and 11 touchdowns on 107 carries (a mark of 6.4 yards per carry).

The Green Wave are 6-2 on the season, but are still in those CFP/top bowl conversations in a way Liberty isn’t thanks to their two losses being close ones against Power Four opponents (34-27 at home to Kansas State on Sept. 7 and 34-19 on the road to Oklahoma on Sept. 14). And they’ve now won five straight and scored 41, 45, 71, 20, and 45 points in those wins, helping with their 40.5 points-per-game average (eighth in FBS). That’s part of why there’s a 55.5-point over/under here.
Tulane has received excellent rushing production from Makhi Hughes, who has 939 rushing yards (seventh in FBS) and nine touchdowns so far with an average of 5.7 yards per carry. Quarterback Darian Mensah has also impressed for the Green Wave, throwing for 1,583 yards and 14 touchdowns with a 64.2 percent completion rate and three interceptions, and defensive back/returner Rayshawn Pleasant has two touchdowns on six kick returns (including a 100-yard one) for 268 yards overall.
But the 16.5-point home underdog 49ers have one of the best returners in the country in RB/KR Henry Rutledge, who has 474 kick return yards (second in FBS) and averages 26.3 yards per return (14th). They also have a solid receiver in O’Mega Blake, who has 18 catches for 419 yards and five touchdowns to date. We’ll see what they can do against the Wave.

As mentioned above, the Broncos currently seem to have the inside track on the one guaranteed G5 CFP berth. And they’ve been very impressive to date, with their only loss a 37-34 one to the Oregon Ducks (currently No. 1 in the AP poll) back on Sept. 7. Since then, they’ve reeled off five straight wins, scoring 56, 45, 62, 28, and 29 points respectively in those. And that last one, a 29-24 road win over UNLV last Friday, might have been the most impressive, as the Rebels were 6-1 at that point.
Running back Ashton Jeanty continues to be the big star for Boise State, and a Heisman Trophy contender (although he’s fallen to fourth in the most recent odds there.) He leads FBS with 1,376 rushing yards and is second with 18 rushing touchdowns (behind only Army QB Bryson Daily, who has 19), but is also averaging 8.7 yards per carry (on 159 carries) despite defenses constantly keying on him.
And Jeanty was averaging 9.9 yards before last week’s big win over the Rebels. There he still ran for 128 yards and a touchdown, but needed 33 carries to get there, an average of just 3.9 yards per carry. He did injure his arm in the first half there, but said he’ll be good to go for this one, and he could be set for a big performance. But receiver Cameron Camper is also worth watching; he’s recorded 28 catches for 477 yards (17.0 yards per catch) and four touchdowns to date, more than a quarter of the Broncos’ 1,608 passing yards and 13 passing touchdowns so far.
For the Aztecs, the expectations aren’t all that high here; they’re 23.5-point underdogs. But they have some players of note; running back Marquez Cooper has rushed 169 times for 748 yards (4.4 yards per carry) and four touchdowns, while receiver Louis Brown IV has 23 catches for 379 yards and two touchdowns. And they could get a big stage here; if the World Series ends with a sweep in Game 4 Tuesday, then this game will be on broadcast Fox rather than FS1.
Featured game 1: Duke @ No. 5 Miami (FL)
12:00 p.m.
ABC
Joe Tessitore, Jesse Palmer
Speaking of the Heisman Trophy, Miami QB Cam Ward is now the second favorite there (behind only Oregon QB Dillon Gabriel). He’s thrown for 2,746 yards to date, second in FBS, and has tossed 24 touchdowns against five interceptions with a 68.0 percent completion mark. He’s also rushed 42 times for 186 yards and three touchdowns with 4.4 yards per carry. But he is coming off one of his least-prolific performances of the season, throwing for just 208 yards with no touchdowns and a 62.9 percent completion rate against Florida State. (The Hurricanes won that game handily, 36-14, to improve to 8-0, though.)
The Blue Devils aren’t a walkover of an opponent, though. They’re 6-2 on the year (albeit with two conference losses, a 24-14 defeat against Georgia Tech on Oct. 5 and a 28-27 overtime loss to SMU last Saturday). And while they’re 20.5-point road underdogs here, they might make this interesting. QB Maalik Murphy has thrown for 1,796 yards and 17 touchdowns so far, albeit with five interceptions and a 58.6 percent completion mark. And he has a pair of solid receivers in Jordan Moore (481 yards and four receiving touchdowns) and Eli Pancol (446 yards and six receiving touchdowns).
Featured game 2: Air Force @ No. 21 Army
12:00 p.m.
CBS
Rich Waltz, Ross Tucker
The Black Knights’ run to 7-0 is one of the most notable stories of this season so far. And now they face a fellow military academy in Air Force. Granted, the 1-6 Falcons are having a much tougher season, with their only win coming Aug. 31 against FCS Merrimack. But it will be quite interesting to see how their differing styles of option football (explained a bit here and here) pair off.
For Army, the aforementioned QB Daily is the key to their offense. His 19 rushing touchdowns are the most in FBS so far, and he has 909 rushing yards (10th in FBS) on 138 carries (6.6 yards per carry). He’s also completed 27 passes on 47 attempts for 629 yards and seven touchdowns, with no interceptions but a 57.4 percent completion mark. They also get major rushing production from Kanye Udoh (633 yards and seven TDs, 6.8 yards per carry) and Noah Short (396 yards and two touchdowns with 11.6 yards per carry). For Air Force (23.5-point underdogs), their leading rusher is actually WR Cade Harris, who has 212 rushing yards on 38 carries (5.6 yards per carry) for four touchdowns to go with 14 catches for 169 yards.
Featured game 3: No. 4 Ohio State @ No. 3 Penn State
12:00 p.m.
Fox
Gus Johnson, Joel Klatt
Much of the focus of Saturday will be on this Buckeyes-Nittany Lions clash, which both ESPN’s College GameDay and Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff will be at. Penn State’s 7-0 and coming in off a 28-13 road win over Wisconsin, while Ohio State is 6-1 (with their only loss against now-No. 1 Oregon on Oct. 12), but coming off a narrow 21-17 home win over Nebraska. But the Buckeyes are 3.5-point road favorites.
Ohio State is averaging 471.9 offensive yards per game to date, ninth in FBS, and 40.3 points per game (11th). Penn State’s close to them on yards (463.7, 13th), but way down on points (33.3). A key question will be if Nittany Lions’ QB Drew Allar (1,640 passing yards, 12 touchdowns against four interceptions, a 71.3 percent completion mark) can go after an apparent knee injury last week. If he can’t, backup Beau Pribula (18 completions on 23 attempts for 200 yards, three touchdowns and an interception with a 78.3 percent completion rate) will have to step in.
For the Buckeyes, a key figure to watch is Jeremiah Smith. On Saturday, Smith became the first true freshman since Sidney Rice in 2005 to score touchdowns in each of his first seven college football games. He has a team-high 623 receiving yards on 35 catches (17.8 yards per catch) for eight touchdowns. We’ll see what he can do here.

The visiting Bulldogs are in their second week back at No. 2 in the AP poll following three weeks at No. 5 in the wake of their Sept. 28 loss to Alabama. And they’re coming off a bye following one of their most impressive wins of the season, beating then-No. 1 Texas 30-15 on Oct. 19.
But while the Florida-Georgia spread (as opposed to the Florida-Georgia Line) has the Bulldogs favored by 16.5 points, plenty of odd things have happened in the series history, which has been played at a neutral site in Jacksonville since 1933 (except for 1994 and 1995, when the old Gator Bowl was demolished and the current Everbank Field stadium was being built on that site) and been unofficially (and sometimes officially) known as the “World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” following Florida Times-Union sports editor Bill Kastelz’s coining of that moniker in 1958.
Overall, Georgia leads the series 55-2-44, and has won the last three meetings. The Bulldogs also won six of the last seven, with the exception being Florida’s 44-28 win in 2020. And they’re certainly in better shape at the moment, coming in at 6-1 versus 4-3. And they have significantly fewer hot seat questions for head coach Kirby Smart versus Gators’ counterpart Billy Napier, who’s now just 15-17 overall in two-and-a-half seasons with Florida to date, and has criticized home fans and been booed by them.
On the players’ side, Georgia pivot Carson Beck is one to watch. He’s thrown for 1,993 yards and 15 touchdowns with a 66.0 percent completion rate so far, but with eight interceptions. Another key Bulldog is RB Trevor Etienne, who previously played for Florida in 2022 and 2023; he has 422 rushing yards and seven touchdowns so far with a 5.1 yards-per-carry average.
For the Gators, freshman QB DJ Lagway has stepped in since Graham Mertz’s season-ending injury against Tennessee on Oct. 12, and has thrown for 1,024 yards and five touchdowns with a 62.8 percent completion rate and five interceptions to date. We’ll see what he can do against the Georgia defense.
Featured game 2: No. 1 Oregon @ Michigan
3:30 p.m.
CBS
Brad Nessler, Gary Danielson
Before the season started, this looked like an incredible clash between the Ducks (No. 3 in the preseason poll) and the Wolverines (No. 9, defending national champions). It’s a little less stellar now, with Michigan at 5-3 and unranked. But the Wolverines are at least coming off a 24-17 win over Michigan State, and the current No. 1 Ducks are very hot, beating then-No. 20 Illinois (who beat Michigan 21-7 the week before) 38-9 last week to move to 8-0.
Oregon is listed as 14.5 point favorites here, and they do have that current Heisman favorite in QB Dillon Gabriel. Gabriel’s 2,371 passing yards on the year are eighth in FBS, and he’s done so extremely efficiently, completing 76.2 percent of his passes and throwing for 18 touchdowns and five interceptions. He threw for 291 yards and three touchdowns (with one interception) last week. He’s also rushed 36 times for 97 yards and five touchdowns.
For Michigan, a key figure is running back Kalel Mullings. He’s rushed 123 times for 694 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 5.6 yards per carry. (He’s also under fire over an alleged “stomping” incident after the Michigan State win, but the Big Ten has decided not to issue further punishment there.) They also have Donovan Edwards, who has carried 89 times for 415 yards and three touchdowns and also shown off his passing ability on trick plays. We’ll see if any of those come out this week.

The No. 10 Aggies are in a great place at the moment following their 38-23 win over then-No. 8 LSU last week, maybe except for head coach Mike Elko having to clarify that his “politician” post-game comments weren’t bashing predecessor Jimbo Fisher. But they’re riding high at 7-1 right now (with their only loss a 23-13 one to current No. 8 Notre Dame on Aug. 31), and they’re 2.5-point favorites heading into this.
The Gamecocks are just 2-6 at the moment, but they have come interestingly close against top teams in the past. That includes a 36-33 loss to LSU on Sept. 14 and a 27-25 one to Alabama on Oct. 12. And they’re coming off a 35-9 win over Oklahoma. Their key offensive figure is freshman QB LaNorris Sellers, who’s missed some games thanks to injury, but has still thrown for 968 yards and five touchdowns (with four interceptions and a 62.9 percent completion mark) and rushed for 247 yards and three touchdowns (with an average of 2.9 yards per carry).
For Texas A&M, they’ve gone back and forth between QBs Conner Weigman and Marcel Reed to date. Reed came in in relief against LSU and was key to that win, completing both of his pass attempts for 70 yards and rushing nine times for 62 yards and three touchdowns. It’s not clear where they’ll go from here, but famed program legend Johnny Manziel has thrown his support behind Reed. So we’ll see what QB balance the Aggies strike going forward.

There’s an interesting ranked-on-ranked matchup here, even if it’s only on ACC Network. 8-0 Pitt is one of the last eight unbeaten teams, and the Panthers are coming off a big 41-13 win over Syracuse. Meanwhile, 7-1 SMU is having a phenomenal debut season in the ACC, and is favored by 7.5 points here, but the Mustangs only reached 7-1 thanks to a 28-27 overtime win over Duke in a very odd manner last week.
For SMU, a key player to watch is RB Brashard Smith. He has 745 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on 117 carries, averaging 6.4 yards per carry. QB Kevin Jennings is also of note, throwing for 1,594 yards and 10 touchdowns (with five interceptions and a 64.3 percent completion mark) and running 67 times for 321 yards (4.8 yards per carry) and three touchdowns.
For Pitt, QB Eli Holstein has thrown for 1,805 yards and 17 touchdowns so far (with five interceptions and a 64.2 percent completion mark) and rushed 62 times for 286 yards and four touchdowns. His key passing target has been WR Konata Mumpfield, who has 27 catches for 473 yards and three touchdowns. RB Desmond Reid has also been a great dual threat; he’s rushed 89 times for 541 yards (a 6.1 yards per carry average) and three touchdowns, and caught 25 passes for 341 yards (second in both categories to Mumpfield) and a team-high four receiving TDs. We’ll see how these figures do against SMU.
