Australia has announced its preliminary 15-player squad for the ICC Men’s Champion’s Trophy kicking off on February 19th in Pakistan.

Young gun Jake Fraser-McGurk was left out of the squad, having opened the batting alongside Matt Short in Australia’s most recent ODI series against Pakistan.

Across his three appearances in that series, the South Australian batsmen scored only 36 runs at an average of 12 with a top score of 16.

He also only tallied 47 runs in the T20 series, averaging 15.66 in his trio of innings in the short format against Pakistan.

Short, meanwhile, retained his spot after he scored only 42 runs in three games in the ODI format, with a recent Big Bash century likely helping his selection credentials.

Travis Head’s return to the 50-over format will see the superstar return to the top of the order, while seamer Sean Abbott was also left out of this squad.

Marcus Stoinis, who was in the squad for the Pakistan series but only played in Game III, has also been named.

Abbott, meanwhile, played in Game I and Game III but has now been omitted in place of all-rounders Aaron Hardie and Mitchell Marsh who didn’t feature due to personal reasons.

“This is a balanced and experienced squad with the core having been involved in the previous one-day World Cup, the West Indies series, last year’s successful tour of the UK and the more recent Pakistan home series,” chairman of selectors George Bailey said in a statement.

“It offers a variety of options for touring management depending on opposition and the conditions that may present in Pakistan.”

This squad is set to take on Sri Lanka in an ODI following the upcoming Test series before travelling to Pakistan.

Bailey is set to speak to media at 12, discussing the additions and omissions of this latest squad.
