Max Patterson has several options once his college football playing career ends next fall.
If the Yorktown High School graduate has another good season as a wide receiver for the Division I University of Delaware team and draws interest from a professional team, he will entertain that possibility.
If not, Patterson is set to put his communications and film degree major to work.
“I want to have a good season next year and see what happens with the pro game. But I’m really excited and I’m anxious and ready to begin that career in film or communications,” Patterson told ARLnow.
This past season for Delaware, the speedy 6-foot Patterson was a starting wide receiver. He caught 25 passes (third most on the team) for 286 yards in 11 games. He had one rushing attempt for five yards and played on special teams.
Patterson did not score a touchdown, something he wants to achieve next season.
The season at Delaware was Patterson’s first. He played the past three years for the Rutgers University football team, one a red-shirt campaign. But he didn’t catch many passes (just three, two against Penn State) or receive much playing time other than on special teams.
Wanting that to change, Patterson transferred to Delaware, which has more of a passing-oriented offense.
“I still have a lot of friends at Rutgers, but coming to Delaware has worked out and was a good decision, and I’m very happy,” Patterson said.
At Yorktown, Patterson was a top wide receiver and kick returner, and was a starting defensive back. He earned all-state second-team honors as a junior in 2019, catching 61 passes for more than 1,200 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Patterson played for longtime Yorktown head coach Bruce Hanson, who retired after this past season.
“He was a very wise coach. He was willing to vary his offense and adapt to the talent and players he had,” Patterson said. “He was generous that way with me.”
Patterson’s older brother, Davis, also played for Hanson and Yorktown wher,e he was an all-region football standout. He is hoping to get a tryout with the D.C. Defenders springtime professional team of the United Football League.
In college, Davis Patterson initially was on the James Madison University team. Next, he played three seasons and caught 49 passes for the Division III Notre Dame College team. Finally, he played his last season of college ball in 2023 at Division I Northern Illinois, catching 16 passes for 197 yards.
