This’s week WTA event in Monastir was full of exciting matches and upsets and it will end with a very unexpected final between #136 Rebecca Sramkova and #151 Sonay Kartal. Although it is not the final most were expecting at the beginning of the week, if both players perform at the level they have shown throughout the week it should be a very exciting match and one that could genuinely go either way.
Head-to-head: Sramkova 1-0 Kartal
Although this might not be the most glamorous matchup, it’s certainly a very unpredictable one. In their one previous meeting, there was nothing to separate both players and a third set tiebreak was needed to decide the winner. This time around it’s a very different match as it is certainly the biggest match of their careers to date: it’s a first WTA final for both players and therefore a huge chance to win their first ever titles. Given the magnitude of the occasion a lot will come down to how both players manage their nerves and are able to produce their best tennis under the highest of pressure. Both played amazing tennis during the entire week, beating several higher ranked players on their way to this final.

Kartal in particular is on a true fairy tale run, coming through the qualifying draw before making her way into Sunday’s final. She was also lucky enough to have her opponent retire in the first of the semifinal, so she should have quite a bit of energy left in the tank for this final battle. It should be a very tight matchup, just like their previous one, which will come down to a few key points here and there and be decided by who can hold their nerve better when it counts.
Prediction: Kartal in 3
