Since the grass season, Nadia Podoroska has only progressed past the opening round in one event. Her saving grace though is that she won that tournament in Barranquilla. She’s usually quite dangerous at altitude and now the struggle will be to replicate that in slightly less favorable conditions. While the Argentine took just one game off Diana Shnaider at the US Open, Antonia Ruzic is far from that quality and maybe this is a chance for Podoroska to finally post another win.

Sonay Kartal was already dominating the ITF Tour a couple of seasons back, but then she hit a wall when facing higher-quality opposition and also suffered from some health issues. She’s making her second rise to the top now and is she better than ever? Perhaps we’ll find out soon once she can test herself against more players at this level. For now, the winning momentum has to count for something and her all-rounded game might draw out errors from Jaqueline Cristian.

Head-to-head: First meeting
Rebeka Masarova has been struggling to follow up on her brilliant 2023 campaign and is back outside the Top 100 now. The talent is still there though and it feels like the Spaniard has too many tools not to get back up there at some point. Zeynep Sonmez probably feels a bit more confident about her game at the moment (especially after qualifying for the main draw), but her skillset is a lot more bland with not many standout traits or weapons.

Kristina Mladenovic’s record for the year is still way below 50%, although she did produce that one surprising run in Figueira da Foz recently. It doesn’t seem like that event changed all that much for the Frenchwoman though and the downfall of her singles career remains a mystery with no solution. Most of the time she’s a bit of a mess on the court with plenty of double faults as well, which makes you think a solid if unspectacular player like Ann Li should be taking advantage of that.

Head-to-head: First meeting
The points for her lucky loser title run in Budapest are off for Maria Timofeeva and her ranking now mostly depends on the Australian Open campaign. Between these two big results, wins are only coming few and far between for the Russian. Beating her junior prodigy compatriot Alina Korneeva in the qualifying was solid though even with the 17-year-old just returning from injury. But Greet Minnen is the better ball-striker and if she can dominate with that inside-out forehand, she should like her chances.
