Three-time defending WPIAL champion South Fayette opens the WPIAL girls basketball playoffs as the favorite to repeat again after earning a No. 1 seed Monday in Class 5A.
The top-seeded boys teams were Upper St. Clair in 6A, Montour in 5A, Belle Vernon in 4A, Aliquippa in 3A, Greensburg Central Catholic in 2A and Neighborhood Academy in A. Joining the Lions as No. 1 girls seeds were Norwin in Class 6A, Blackhawk in 4A, Shady Side Academy in 3A, Neshannock in 2A and Union in A.
The 12 tournaments conclude with championship games Feb. 27-March 1 at Petersen Events Center.
The playoffs begin Thursday with preliminary round games. However, most brackets don’t start play until next week.
