Led by Thorpedo Anna, there were no fewer than 45 Breeders’
Cup hopefuls who had their final workouts before their upcoming travel to Del
Mar for the championship races next week.
They were part of one of the busiest Saturdays of timed
works this year. There were 83 graded-stakes winners on the tab.
Saratoga
Multiple Grade 1 winner Thorpedo Anna breezed five
furlongs on Saturday in 1:01.24 on the Oklahoma dirt training track at Saratoga.
Trained by Kenny McPeek, Thorpedo Anna with exercise rider
Danny Ramsey up posted the sharp work in company with multiple stakes-placed
4-year-old gelding Denington, who also was clocked at 1:01.24. Thorpedo Anna
sat off until the quarter pole and galloped out well past her stablemate.
The Fast Anna dark bay has been working weekly en route to
the Breeders’ Cup Distaff next Saturday at Del Mar.
McPeek took to social media to post video and describe the
move.

“This is Denington on the inside and Thorpedo Anna on the
outside, going five-eighths,” McPeek said on X. “The instructions for him to
stay right next to Denington until the quarter pole.”
Thorpedo Anna boasts a 9: 7-2-0 record with $2,803,663 in
earnings, including Grade 1 wins last out in the Cotillon on Sept. 21 at Parx
and before that in the Kentucky Oaks, the Acorn and the Coaching Club American
Oaks. She also won this year in the Fantasy (G2). She also showed her ability vs.
colts when she lost to Fierceness by just a head facing colts in the Travers
(G1).
Belmont Park
Chad Brown was trackside Saturday to watch eight of his
Breeders’ Cup hopefuls breeze over the Belmont Park dirt training track,
including Classic contender Sierra Leone and dual Grade 1 winner
Chancer McPatrick, who is pre-entered for the Juvenile.
Brown, the four-time Eclipse Award-winning conditioner who
has trained 18 Breeders’ Cup winners, is well positioned for more main-track
success heading into next week’s championships at Del Mar with Sierra Leone, Chancer
McPatrick, Domestic Product in the Dirt Mile, Ways and Means in
the Filly & Mare Sprint and Raging Sea in the Distaff.
“We’ve been down this road before, and we’ve brought a good
group in, particularly on the dirt,” Brown said. “We’ve won dirt races before
at the Breeders’ Cup including at Del Mar with Good Magic. We’ve had some close
finishes in the Distaff running second three times. Overall I don’t know that I’ve
had as many dirt horses that will be this prominent in the wagering as I have
this year. That core group of horses on the dirt, some of them are likely to
vie for favoritism.”
Brown’s grass contingent at the Breeders’ Cup will
include Virgin Colada in the Juvenile Fillies Turf, Zulu Kingdom in
the Juvenile Turf and the trio of Carl Spackler, Chili Flag and Gina
Romantica in the Mile.
“We have some chances in many of the races we’re
participating in,” Brown said. “These are tough races, and with each
race it’s hard to get the horses there and healthy and in good condition all
the way across the country. It’s a very solid group.”
Domestic Product “worked good,” Brown said. His 48.31-second
breeze came in preparation for the two-turn Dirt Mile.
Chancer McPatrick, undefeated in three starts, worked a solo
half-mile in 49.01 seconds.
“He worked great and galloped out super,” Brown said. “He’s
always been a classy, intelligent young horse, and he’s continued to develop. I’ve
been very impressed with him.”
Dual graded-stakes winner Sierra Leone went a solo half-mile
in 49.81 seconds, galloping out strongly through the turn. This effort followed
a half-mile effort in 49.25 seconds last week at Belmont Park.
“He had a monster work last week, and I wanted him to work
just a tick easier,” Brown said. “It went perfect, and he galloped out super.
He’s ready to go. … (He can win) if he handles the track and gets the right
set up and trip.”
Grade 1 winner Ways and Means worked a half-mile in 48.63
seconds in company with Grade 3-winner Shidabhuti.
Raging Sea worked a 49.0-second breeze in company with Occult.
She will have one less foe to chase down in the Distaff with the departure of
the retiring Idiomatic, but she may have lost a potential pace set up in the
process.
“I hate to hear it. I’ve been in that position
before,” Brown said. “I feel bad for the connections and for the
fans. They want to see the top horses run.”
The undefeated colt Zulu Kingdom worked a
half-mile in 48.63 seconds in company to the inside of Running Bee.
Virgin Colada worked a half-mile in 50.11 seconds in company
with multiple graded-stakes-winning millionaire Fluffy Socks.
“On the dirt, she’s sort of an average workhorse, but I
loved her mechanics today and how she got through the lane,” Brown said. “She
can be a little bit of a looky-loo kind of horse, but today she was focused and
switched her leads perfect and galloped out. Very professional. The time doesn’t
matter for me. It was how she did it. I was very pleased with her.”
Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher saw Grade 1 winner Tapit
Trice work a half-mile in 49.21 seconds Saturday over the Belmont Park
dirt training track in preparation for the Breeders’ Cup Classic. He said the final
breeze before heading west went according to plan.
“He went in 49, and he looked good. Just what we were hoping
for. I liked the way he was moving, and he galloped out with good energy,” said
Pletcher, adding that he worked him solo with the Classic approaching. “We didn’t
want to do too much.”
Tapit Trice likely will be much colder at the mutuels
windows than multiple Grade 1-winning stablemate and 2023 champion juvenile
male Fierceness, but Pletcher said their running styles give them both a
chance.
“Tapit Trice will probably be a little bit further back, and
Fierceness will most likely be towards the front,” Pletcher said. “I don’t
think they compromise each other’s chances.”
Tapit Trice did not wear blinkers for Saturday’s move, which
Pletcher added four starts back when third in last year’s Travers (G1). Pletcher
confirmed they will stay on for the Classic.
Trainer and co-owner Jorge Abreu’s Grade 1 winner Scottish
Lassie worked Saturday at Belmont Park in preparation for the Juvenile
Fillies, which will be run Friday at Del Mar.
The daughter of McKinzie breezed after the training track
reopened at 7:30 a.m. EDT and was guided through her exercise by jockey José
Lezcano, who piloted her to victory last out to graduate in Frizette (G1) on
Oct. 5 at Belmont at the Big A.
Scottish Lassie worked a half-mile in 49.61 seconds to the
outside of Jody’s Pride, the runner-up of last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile
Fillies. Scottish Lassie sat slightly behind her sophomore workmate early, and the
two were on even terms traveling through the lane.
“She was on the outside with José, who said he liked the way
she galloped out today,” Abreu said. “For times I had 49-and-three with a nice
gallop-out in 1:02, 1:14, and 1:28-and-four.”
Abreu said he wanted a maintenance work for Scottish Lassie
as her trip to Del Mar nears.
“We gave her a nice easy breeze last week, and I told José I
wanted a maintenance work today but to let her gallop out, which is what he
did,” Abreu said. “He sat off a little. They didn’t break head and head, and he
let her come and do her thing.”
Abreu said that Scottish Lassie should handle the 1
1/16-mile distance of the Juvenile Fillies.
“I don’t think the extra sixteenth of a mile is going to be
any problem for her,” he said. “The way she ran last time and won, I’m not
thinking any extra sixteenth is going to be any different.”
Scottish Lassie is the first graded-stakes winner for Abreu,
who was a longtime assistant for Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito and for
four-time Eclipse Award-winning conditioner Chad Brown before going out on his
own in 2016.
Keeneland
On Saturday over a turf course labeled as firm, Brown sent
out his two Keeneland-based pre-entrants in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Carl
Spackler and Chili Flag worked together for a half-mile breeze in 50.4 seconds.
According to Keeneland clockers, their final quarter mile went in 22.8 seconds.
“I thought it was a great work, very straightforward,” said
regular jockey Tyler Gaffalione, who rode Carl Spackler to win Keeneland’s Turf
Mile (G1) on Oct. 5. “He’s really feeling good out there. He’s a very forward
horse even in the afternoons. He’s just wanting to do it.”
Gaffalione, the fall meet’s leading jockey with 22 wins
going into Saturday’s closing-day card, said he is confident how Carl Spackler
will perform next Saturday in the Breeders’ Cup.
“He’s shown us a lot,” Gaffalione said. “He’s shown us
everything we need to see this year. He’s coming into the race with great form,
so we have a ton of confidence. He’s been putting himself in the game a bit
more. We probably won’t change anything up, but we’ll let him get out there,
run his race and see if we’re good enough.”
Seven horses pre-entered for the Breeders’ Cup had their
final works Saturday morning at Keeneland.
Trainer Cherie DeVaux’s five pre-entrants, Cagliostro for
the Dirt Mile, More Than Looks for the Mile, Pipeline for
the Dirt Mile, Pyrenees for the Classic and Vahva for the Filly
& Mare Sprint, turned in half-mile maintenance works on the dirt track
labeled fast.
“This morning we were just working, looking for maintenance
moves out here,” DeVaux said. “There’s nothing going to be too flashy. Just
trying to make sure they’re on task and doing as well as they can be. All of
them looked great. This week not looking for too much out of them is the
objective.”
Cagliostro went in company with Pyrenees, and both were
clocked in 49.0 seconds.
“If you take them solo, they’ll have a tendency to be a bit
lazy,” DeVaux said. “You just want to make sure they keep to task. They’re easy
enough to ride, (so) they’re not going to do too much out there.”
More Than Looks turned in a solo work in 49.6 seconds. Pipeline
breezed the distance in 48.2 seconds. Vahva worked by herself in 48.0 seconds,
and Keeneland clockers caught her in fractions of 12.4, 24.0, 35.6 and 48.0
before she galloped out five furlongs in 1:01.4.
For trainer Gustavo Delgado, Juvenile contender Ferocious went
five furlongs in 1:01.8 with a final quarter-mile in 23.2 seconds. He galloped
out six furlongs in 1:14.8.
For trainer Wesley Ward, Sprint pre-entrant Nakatomi
went five furlongs in company with Grade 1 winner Chi Town Lady in
1:01.0.
Churchill Downs
Breeders’ Cup contenders are set to ship out early Monday to
Del Mar after their final works Saturday at Churchill Downs.
Among those completing their final preparations were Federal
Judge, going four furlongs in 48.4 seconds; Highland Falls, five furlongs in
1:00.2; Rattle N Roll, five furlongs in 59.6; Saudi Crown, five
furlongs in 1:00.0; and Tumbarumba, four furlongs in 49.2.
Trainer Brad Cox worked 15 horses Saturday morning
with Federal Judge and Saudi Crown leading off his group at 5:30 a.m.
EDT working by themselves.
Dirt Mile contender Saudi Crown, with jockey Florent Géroux aboard,
logged his breeze beginning from the 4 1/2-furlong pole and finishing just past
the wire. The duo galloped out six furlongs in 1:12.6.
“Saudi Crown had a great work this morning,” Géroux said.
“He’s been off a little bit, so we wanted to make sure he got a lot out of his
training. He showed that today and last week. He worked in company last week,
which went well, and I thought today was even better, a good sign going into a
race.”
Federal Judge, considered a top contender for the Breeders’
Cup Sprint, worked a few minutes later under exercise rider Joel Osorio.
The duo began from the three-eighths pole and finished their move at the
seven-eighths pole.
At 7:15 a.m., Cox’s final Breeders’ Cup contender of the
morning, Highland Falls, worked with jockey Luis Sáez, breezing outside
stablemate Liberal Arts. The duo started the move from the 4 1/2-furlong
pole before galloping out six furlongs in 1:13.4. Highland Falls is pre-entered
in the Classic.
“He worked well this morning and is coming into the race in
great form,” Sáez said. “I think he’s improving even more at the
mile-and-a-quarter distance. He ran huge last time in the Jockey Club Gold Cup
(G1) at that distance.”
The local Breeders’ Cup contingent will depart Churchill
Downs at 4 a.m. EDT Monday, vanning to Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky
International Airport in Hebron, Ky., with a scheduled arrival at Del Mar early
in the afternoon. Also scheduled for the flight are Churchill-based
contenders Jonathan’s Way for the Juvenile and Quickick for
the Juvenile Fillies along with Turfway Park-based contenders Next for
the Classic and Minaret Station for the Juvenile Turf.

Horses trained by Bob Baffert and Phil D’Amato accounted for
18 of the Breeders’ Cup pre-entrants who got in their final works at Santa Anita
before next week’s championships at Del Mar.
Baffert worked four of his 10 pre-entrants. Citizen Bull for
the Juvenile, winner of the American Pharoah (G1), earned a bullet when going

and Vodka With a Twist at 1:00.8.

winner of the Rodeo Drive (G2), worked five furlongs in 1:00.4. Che Evasora for

the Surfer Girl (G3), went five furlongs in 1:00.4.

the Juvenile Turf, winner of the Zuma Beach (G3), went five furlongs in 1:00.2.

out, went four furlongs in 48.8 seconds.
Working for trainer John Sadler were Kirstenbosch for the Filly
& Mare Sprint and Supa Speed for the Juvenile Fillies Turf. Kirstenbosch,
third in the Chillingworth off an eight-month layoff, went five furlongs in
1:01.2. Supa Speed, second in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf, went five
furlongs in 1:02.8.

Powell, worked four furlongs in 48.2 seconds.
Sugar Fish for the Distaff, who won the Zenyatta, went five

pre-entered in both the Sprint and Dirt Mile in that order of preference, worked
