CHARLESTON, S.C. – Longwood women’s golf wrapped up the Oyster Shuck Match Play with a 4-1 win over North Dakota today to open up the spring season.
By virtue of their second match play win in as many days, the Lancers finished fifth at the top of the consolation bracket.
Chiara Wippert, who was unbeaten during the tournament, led the way and was named to the All-Tournament Team and posted a 3&2 win on the day.
NOTABLES:
The matches were tight in the final round between the two sides, but Longwood narrowly edged North Dakota, with all five matches nearly going down to the wire.
Wippert was the only player for the Lancers who won by multiple holes, winning 3&2 over Lily Bredemeier.
Ester Choi picked up a 2&0 win, her first of the tournament, over Kylie Warner.
Abigail Sheldon nipped Emersyn Walker 1&0 to pick up her second win of the tournament.
Breanna Hoese also earned a 2&1 win over Nikki Bowen to give Longwood its fourth win of the round.
WHAT THEY SAID:
“Overall, I’m pleased with our first tournament,” said Longwood Head Coach Megan Weaver. “Without having live scoring, it was challenging to strategize when and where to position our touch points. Having Robert Boyd there came in clutch so we could divide and conquer; the team raved about his help on Par 3’s today!”
“I’m also so happy that everyone walked away from the event with at least one match won,” Weaver added. “I was a black cat for the first roughly 12 holes—I saw a lot of opportunities to work on leading up to our next tournament—but it also shows the resiliency of the team to battle back after a rough shot or a lost hole. And clearly, there were a lot more great shots that I didn’t see to go 4-1 today!”
“Last, but certainly not least, Chiara deserves recognition for making the tournament team by going undefeated in all three matches!” Weaver said.
