GRANVILLE, Ohio (Sept. 1) – The Denison University women’s golf team put together a strong round Sunday to take home the team title at the Lynn Schweizer Invitational. The two-day, 36-hole event was hosted at the Denison Golf Club.
The victory marks the best finish for the Denison women in the season-opening tournament since the 2013-14 season.
The top five in the team standings were as follows: Denison (610), Randolph Macon (615), Centre (619), Christopher Newport (621) and Methodist (625).
Denison showed tremendous depth as a team, as the second five for Denison finished sixth among the 15 competing teams. The second five for Denison put forth the second best team score Sunday with a 304, trailing only the top Big Red team.
The top Big Red team compiled a total of 302 to secure the title. Denison entered the day in a tie with Randolph Macon. The strong round on Sunday gave the Big Red a five-stroke edge in the team standings.
“We are very proud of the women and their fight. It is great experience to be in contention in a tournament setting and finish on top,” said head coach Lauren Grogan. “It was a strong day all around, and this demonstrated the depth of our team this year. Winning at home in front of family and friends is a special feeling and we cannot wait for what else is store.”
Ella McRoberts led the Big Red by tying for third place. The senior carded a score of 75 in each round to finish with a 36-hole score of 150.
Lizzy Grant finished tied for fifth. The sophomore turned in a strong effort over the two days. Grant’s two-day total was 151 (75-76).
Siena Maschke also finished inside the top 10. Maschke tied for ninth place with a two-day total of 152 (76-76).
Lindsey Byer and Anna Klass also put forth strong efforts. Byer finished in 14th place (80-75=155). Klass tied for 15th at the event with a 36-hole total of (77-79=156).
Natalia Fanucchi tied for 21st and Elizabeth Lyon tied for 23rd. Fanucchi’s two-day total was 157 (82-75) and Lyon recorded a 158 (83-75). Isabella Dolan rounded out those finishing inside the top 30. Dolan tied for 27th at 159 (84-75).
Denison returns to competition at the Wisconsin-Whitewater Invitational on Sept. 22-23. The two-day event will be played at TPC Wisconsin.
