CHARLESTON, S.C. – Hannah Wang led the day for Longwood women’s golf at the Oyster Shuck Classic as the team opened its spring season at the Charleston Municipal Golf Course.
Wang won both her rounds of match play, and the Lancers went 1-1 in match play on the day. The team fell 3-2 in a narrow loss to Radford in the morning before bouncing back and taking down Presbyterian 3-1 in the afternoon.
For Longwood, it marks the team’s first rounds of match play since advancing to the match play in the Big South Tournament for the first time in team history this past spring.
NOTABLES:
In the morning, Wang was excellent in her first round, taking down Radford’s top player, Macy Johnson. Won cruised, winning 6&5 to clinch with five holes to play.
Chiara Wippert also won 3&2 over Radford’s McKenzie Weddle for Longwood’s other point.
The loss pitted Longwood against Presbyterian in the consolation bracket, with the two sides squaring off in the afternoon.
Breanna Hoese rolled to a comfortable 5&4 win over Presbyterian’s Taylor Reaves, and Wang won her round 3&1 over Maddie Peake for her second win on the day.
Freshman Abigail Sheldon picked up a 4&2 win against Sofi Carles to clinch the match for Longwood, 3-1.
WHAT THEY SAID:
“It was interesting starting the spring season with a match play event,” said Longwood Head Coach Megan Weaver. “First, it’s a good barometer of Big South standings with several conference teams here. Second, it’s good preparation for the conference format.”
“We didn’t know the lineup of the other team before choosing the matches,” Weaver added. “I felt we had a great matchup with Radford. Hannah was the MVP today, first knocking off Radford’s number one player 6&5 and being the only team member to win both morning and afternoon matches. We had a better showing in the afternoon against Presbyterian. I hope we take this momentum into the Consolation Bracket Finals tomorrow morning.”
