GREENVILLE, N.C. – Longwood women’s golf opened up the team’s second tournament of the season, and the team sits 14th out of 15 teams midway through round two on Monday at the Pirate Collegiate Classic.
The tournament, which was originally scheduled for 54 holes, will be shortened to 36 due to inclement weather, with the remainder of the second round to be played tomorrow.
NOTABLE RESULTS:
The Lancers are eight shots back of 13th, a spot held by West Georgia. Longwood dealt with wet conditions throughout the day, with a rain delay midway through the day in addition to the lightning delay and darkness that suspended play at the end of the day.
Freshmen Chiara Wippert and Abigail Sheldon led the way for the Lancers on the day. Wippert carded an opening round 76 and is two over through nine holes in her second round, and she is tied for 37th in the 84-player field on the par 72 course.
Meanwhile Sheldon is one shot back and is tied for 45th. She posted a 79 through the first round before being even through eight in round two.
Ester Choi is tied for 67th, Aine Martin is in 75th, and Hannah Wang is in 78th place midway through their second rounds.
WHAT THEY SAID:
“The team that showed up today was very different from the team of yesterday and the last week,” said Longwood Head Coach Megan Weaver. “Our short game has been dialed in lately, but that wasn’t the case today. The other struggle is that we didn’t put ourselves in favorable positions to score. Fairways should trump distance out here in these wet course conditions. Round two started out better, so we will hopefully finish out strong tomorrow!”
