WAVERLY, Iowa— The Wartburg women’s tennis team opened the 2024 season finishing sixth in the Kohawk Classic and hosts the Wartburg Invite on Sep 7-8.
Last Season
Wartburg placed fourth in the American Rivers Conference Championships in Ames, Iowa. Hannah Fangmann earned All-Conference honors from last year’s campaign. This year’s team will be led by Hannah Fangmann and Drucilla Kramer, who have returned for their senior seasons.
Season Outlook
The depth of this year’s team is a notable strength.
“This is going to be the most competitive team we’ve had from 1-7. We just had a competition and this is the first time we’ve had four kids in the 70’s and another two players below 83, so I feel really good about that. Our goal is to win the conference championship, so we’re going to push towards that in a really competitive fall.” said head Coach John Thompson in his opening statement at media day.
Experienced members of the team have developed strategic skills as they transition into another year. “It comes with course management. As they go through years in golf, you get to know the golf courses better. That’s what they can take from year to year. When you show up you know exactly where to play it to be more strategic,” said Thompson.
