CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s golf team is in third place after the first day of the Islander Classic Monday at Corpus Christi Country Club.
 
UTRGV finished the day with a two-round total of 610 after posting a 306 and then a 304 in the second. The Vaqueros are four strokes ahead of fourth place New Mexico Junior College and four shots back of Lamar for second place.
 
Junior Jackie Howard Gonzalez sits in fourth after shooting a two-round total of 148 and posting rounds of 75 and 73. Freshman Kieli Saenz is tied for fifth and sits two strokes back of Gonzalez after shooting a 76 in the first and 74 in the second.
                           
Sophomore Natalia Rodriguez is tied for 13^th after shooting a two-round total of 154 after carding rounds of 76 and 78. Senior Catherine Flores is currently tied for 18^th after posting a 78 in the first round and a 79 in the second for a two-round total of 157.
 
Sophomore Preston Saenz finished tied for 22^nd after recording a two-round total of 158 after shooting a 79 in both rounds. Meanwhile, sophomore Camila Herrera is tied for 38^th with a two-round total of 163 including a 79 in the first round and 84 in the second.
 
Senior Madi Ozuna sits in 42^nd, finishing with a two-round total of 166 after carding an 82 in the first round and 84 in the second. Freshman Maria Jose Ramirez is in 45^th after shooting an 82 in the first round and 85 in the second.
 

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi holds the lead with a two-round score of 596.
 
The Vaqueros will wrap up the Islander Open on Tuesday with the final round starting at 8:30 a.m.
