RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s golf team defeated the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 3-2 in a match play event, as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union, on Friday at McAllen Country Club.
The win gives UTRGV three points in the showdown standings to tie things up at 3-3. The next showdown event will be a volleyball match on Oct. 31 in Corpus Christi.
The Vaqueros took the early 1-0 lead as sophomore Camila Herrera defeated Elsa Tornvall 4 and 2. Senior Cristina Galban followed with a 4 and 3 win over Carla Fernandez giving the Vaqueros the 2-0 lead.
The Islanders grabbed a point after Tristan Gabbard defeated junior Jackie Howard Gonzalez 2 and 1 but it was freshman Kieli Saenz who clinched the win for UTRGV as she defeated Lucia Ramirez 2 and 1 making it 3-1.
The Islanders added the final point as Samantha Gibbs beat Natalia Rodriguez 2 and 1 in the final matchup.
The Vaqueros close out their fall season on a positive note and will return to action in the spring semester with their schedule being released at a later date.
