The University of Hawai’i women’s golf team close out the fall season with the Nanea Invitational, Monday, Oct. 28 through Wednesday, Oct. 30 at the Nanea Golf Club in Kailua-Kona, Hawai’i.
Formerly the Pac-12 Preview, the Nanea Invitational has been traditionally held in the final week of the fall season and exclusive to Pac-12 teams and UH. Last year, the tournament moved to the spring season and included several non-Pac-12 teams.
This year’s 11-team field includes Arizona State, BYU, California, Colorado, Hawai’i, Michigan, Oregon State, San Jose State, Stanford, Texas, and Washington. The tournament is hosted by top-ranked Stanford and other Top 10 teams include No. 6 Texas and No. 8 Arizona State.
Participants will play 54 holes, 18 on each day, at the 6,449-yard, par-73 course. Nanea Golf Club is considered the most exclusive golf course in the state of Hawai’i. The course opened in 2003 and was designed by David McLay Kidd.
The Rainbow Wahine have annually competed in the Nanea Invitational since the tournament’s inaugural year in 2013 and are considered the host in name only.
UH’s line-up for this year’s event includes Maline Kraus, Varnika S. Achanta, Kellie Yamane, Emiko Sverduk, and Mia Hirashima. Kraus led the team at this past week’s Rainbow Wahine Invitational with a 1-over 217 total and tie for 24th finish. Fellow newcomer Achanta posted a pair of under par rounds in her 3-over 219 showing, which included a 2-under 70 on the final day.
Yamane and Sverduk also competed in last year’s Pac-12 Preview and placed 49th and 56th, respectively.
