For the second straight tournament, Carolina’s 15th-ranked women’s golf team is headed to the Sunshine State. This time, Carolina is competing in the Moon Golf Invitational, teeing off in the first of three rounds on Sunday at Suntree Country Club in Melbourne, Fla.
Bolstered by freshman
Helen Yeung’s tie for third, Carolina placed third in the 17-team field two weeks ago in the PDI Intercollegiate. For Yeung, it was the highest result by a Tar Heel freshman since 2017.
Each of Carolina’s five starters finished under par for the tournament, and the Tar Heels shot 11 under in the final round, the fourth-best score to par over 18 holes in UNC history. Overall, Carolina finished 24 under, the second-lowest 54-hole score to par ever by the Tar Heels and the third time UNC has shot 20 under or better over 54 holes.
This season, UNC has placed in the top five in four of five events, with each of those top five performances coming in the last four tournaments. It is the longest streak of top-five team finishes in stroke play since posting three wins and a fifth in 2012-13.
Yeung and Streicher are playing in the top two slots for the Tar Heels this week. Joining them in the starting lineup are
Inez Ng, Ing Iadpluem and
Reagan Southerland. Freshman
Marie Prats-Rigual joined the roster from France in January and will be playing in her first collegiate event as an individual entry.
Carolina last played in the Moon Golf Invitational in the spring of 2023, finishing 12th out of 17 teams. Streicher led UNC, finishing 4 under in a tie for 17th.
Streicher is on a season-long hot streak. She tied for seventh at the PDI Intercollegiate, her fifth top 10 effort in as many tournaments. She is ranked 25th nationally and was invited to compete in the prestigious Augusta National Women’s Amateur in April, the first Tar Heel to play in the event.
The junior from South Africa is Carolina’s all-time leader in stroke average at 72.09 per round. Her 2024-25 scoring average of 70.20 is on pace to top her current single-season Tar Heel record of 71.83, which she established last season.
UNC’s best finish in the Moon Golf Invitational was fourth in 2020.
The Moon Golf Invitational, hosted by Louisville, annually boasts one of the strongest fields of the season, with 11 of 17 teams appearing in the top 25 in the Scoreboard/Clippd rankings. Joining the 15
th-ranked Tar Heels in the field are ACC rivals No. 7 Florida State, No. 10 Virginia, No. 12 Wake Forest, and No. 4 South Carolina, No. 6 Texas, No. 9 Northwestern.
“The Moon Golf Invitational is a great opportunity for us to see where we’re at and is very motivating, as well,” says head coach
Aimee Neff. “In order to be the best you have to beat the best and this will be a great gauge for us. We’re looking forward to competing the next few days.”
Carolina is paired with Tennessee and Texas in the opening round.
