The Valparaiso University women’s golf team finished the day ahead of four teams after beginning the Butler Fall Invitational with 36 holes on Monday at the par-70, 6022-yard Highland Golf and Country Club in Indianapolis.
How It Happened
- Senior Madison Keil (LaGrange, Ill. / Lakeland) led the Beacons with a 36-hole score of 149 (+9), tied for 28th in a 106-player field. Keil carded a 75 in the opening round before following with a 74 in Round 2.
- The team’s second-best performance came from senior Anna Fay (Ada, Mich. / Forest Hills), who turned in a 76 in each round to finish the day at 152 (+12). She is tied for 48th on the player leaderboard.
- Golfing as an individual, sophomore Bella Campos (Honolulu, Hawaii / IMG Academy) had a strong first round with a 74 (+4), while senior Katie Schreiner (Fenton, Mo. / Summit) improved by six strokes from Round 1 to Round 2 with a 75 in the second round.
- As a team, Valpo posted a 310 in Round 1 and 308 in Round 2, finishing the day at 618 (+28). Valpo finished ahead of four teams in the 17-team field as the Beacons lead Northern Kentucky (621), Taylor (623) and Eastern Illinois (649) entering the final round.
- Youngstown State leads the tournament at 574 (+14), while Butler’s Kelli Scheck is atop the player leaderboard at 140 (E).
Inside the Rounds
- Valpo’s Round-2 score of 308 tied for the 11th-best 18-hole score in program history. It marked the team’s second-best round of the season after a 307 in the first round of the Cardinal Classic.
- The Beacons thrived on par-5 holes, averaging a 5.33.
- Campos and Fay produced four birdies apiece.
- Campos’ 74 outdid her previous career-low round of 79.
- Keil’s 74 tied a season best and was one stroke away from her career best.
