Omaha, Neb. — Returning to the national limelight for the fourth time this season, Creighton Women’s Basketball closes out the 2024 calendar year in the Big Apple as the Bluejays take on St. John’s at 12:30 p.m. (CT) on Saturday, December 28 on FOX.

The Red Storm have been a thorn in Creighton’s side since meeting in the NCAA Tournament in 2012. Scouting St. John’s (10-2, 0-1 BIG EAST)
The Red Storm opened the season with six consecutive victories, before falling at home to Harvard (54-52 on Nov. 28). Following that contest St. John’s won four in a row before opening BIG EAST action with a road loss (71-57) at Villanova on Dec. 21.

Always a defensive stalwart under head coach Joe Tartamella, St. John’s is limiting opponents to 51.8 ppg this season. The Red Storm are forcing 18.4 turnovers per game.

Offensively the Red Storm are led by Lashae Dwyer (15.3 ppg) and the tandem of Skye Owen (9.6 ppg) as well as Ber’Nyah Mayo (9.1 ppg).

Scouting Creighton (9-3, 1-0 BIG EAST)

The Bluejays suffered a stinging loss to #1 UCLA (70-41) in San Francisco in a neutral site battle with the Bruins on the home floor of the Golden State Warriors as well as the future home of the Golden State Valkyries.

Entering the game with UCLA, Creighton has rattled off eight straight victories, including six consecutive away from home.

A few differences in the wins and losses have been the performance on the glass and on defense. In the victories the Bluejays have limited opponents to 62.7 points per game and a 42.6 shooting percentage. In addition Creighton has won the battle of the boards 309 (34.3 rpg) to 287 (31.9).

In the three defeats the Bluejays are allowing 77.3 ppg, a 48.1 shooting percentage and have been out rebounded 142 (47.3 rpg)

to 84 (28.0 rpg).

The tandem of Lauren Jensen and Morgan Maly have guided the Bluejays’ offense. Jensen leads Creighton with a 17.8 ppg, while Maly is right behind at 17.5 ppg.



Streaking Toward the New Year

After hitting 36 straight free throws to open the season, senior Morgan Maly is streaking once more. She started the 2024-25 season 2-for-4 from the charity stripe, but has connected on her last 22. She also has a streak of 21 consecutive games reaching double-digits. The last time she didn’t hit double figures was Feb. 10, 2024 vs. DePaul with three points. The 21 game streak began at St. John’s on Feb. 16.



Lockett and Townsend Shine Against the Bruins

Junior Kiani Lockett and Kennedy Townsend were a pair of bright spots against #1 UCLA on December 20. Lockett grabbed a career-high eight rebounds to go along with seven points, while Townsend delivered her fourth career double-digit performance with 10 points. Kennedy went 4-for-8 from the field to provide a boost off the bench.
