University of Wisconsin football staffer Jack Del Rio was arrested and cited for operating while intoxicated, first offense, early Friday morning.
Del Rio, 61, was driving in the area of South Segoe Road and Keating Terrace around 12:35 a.m. Friday when his vehicle hit a street sign, broke a fence and came to a rest in a yard, according to a Madison Police Department incident report.
Witnesses directed officers to Del Rio, who was walking away from the area. Del Rio was transported to a local hospital for a blood draw and released to a responsible party, per the incident report.
BadgerExtra has filed a request with the department for the police reports connected with the crash. The Badgers were off on a bye week last week.
Wisconsin athletics released this statement: “Wisconsin athletics is aware of the incident involving football staff member Jack Del Rio. We take matters like this very seriously and we are continuing to gather information.”

Badgers coach Luke Fickell is slated to speak with reporters at noon Monday.
Del Rio joined the Wisconsin staff in August as a special adviser to Fickell after spending nearly 35 years in the NFL as a player and coach. He was the coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars (2003-11) and Oakland Raiders (2015-17) during his NFL career and most recently the defensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders before being let go last November.
Del Rio’s role with the Badgers was general support on both sides of the ball, as well as a sounding board for player personnel staff as Wisconsin prepares for a professional model brought on by proposed settlement in the House v. NCAA antitrust lawsuit. Players called Del Rio a “resource” and said he would pop into meeting rooms and contribute advice.
Fickell and Del Rio met when Fickell was pursuing an NFL career and Del Rio was a strength coach with the New Orleans Saints.
