RHINELANDER, Wis, (WJFW) — According to ESPN there were 68 million adults that placed a bet on the Super Bowl last year for a total of $23.1 billion.
While betting on sports can be a fun way to experience the big game in a different way, make sure you’re being responsible.
With so many options to bet on from the coin toss to the duration of The National Anthem, there’s a plethora of options to place your money on this Sunday.
The folks at the Wisconsin Council of Problem Gambling say for gambling addicts the event causes them to chase losses from this season.
“For a person who has a gambling problem the reason is because they’ve been betting on games all season long, and they may have lost a lot of money, and the Super Bowl becomes kind of the this is it I’m going to make it or I’m going to break it,” said Rose Blocinski, Executive Director, Wisconsin Council of Problem Gambling.
For those that have family and friends that participate in the parlay party, it’s important to notice the signs of when the gambling is potentially becoming problem.
“They might see gambling related things laying around or on the computer that you hadn’t seen in the past,” Blocinski said. “Somebody who all of a sudden – especially again with sports -has this really big interest in all different aspects of sports that they didn’t have before that.”
According to the Council gambling addictions can even lead to self harm.
The Wisconsin Council of Problem Gambling can get you the resources and help when in crisis.
“One of our biggest things is our 24-hour helpline, so when somebody calls in it can be the gambler themselves, might be a family member or a friend concerned about somebody’s gambling, we’re able to assess if there’s any suicidal issues because compulsive gamblers do have a higher suicide rate,” Blocinski said.
Remember to gamble responsibly, never chase your losses, and only bet what you can afford to lose.
