A major winter storm that has spread snow across Southern states this week, including the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida and Louisiana, has impacted multiple sporting events in the region.
Schools canceled classes in many areas across at least eight states, and cities such as New Orleans set snowfall records, with 10-12 inches falling in some areas. This led to several changes to the sports schedule, with potentially more to come.
Here are some of the key changes as a result of the weather.
A huge SEC women’s basketball matchup between No. 5 LSU and No. 2 South Carolina was moved to Friday, the conference announced Wednesday.
The game was originally scheduled for Thursday in Columbia, S.C., but the weather, which dumped up to a foot of snow in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana area, made travel ill-advised for the Tigers. It is expected that LSU will be able to fly out on Thursday, and the school announced that its home game on Sunday against Texas A&M remains on the schedule.
In another sign of how impactful the weather has been on the Baton Rouge area, LSU announced that its physical campus would remain closed on Thursday and advised students to stay off the roads.
LSU is 20-0 and in second place in the SEC at 5-0 in conference play. South Carolina, the defending national champion, leads the SEC at 6-0 and is 18-1 overall.
An NBA contest between the Bucks and Pelicans that was scheduled to take place Wednesday in New Orleans was postponed to a later date, the league announced.
With many of the city’s roadways covered with ice and snow, and much of New Orleans inaccessible by car, the game had to be rescheduled. A new date will be announced at a later time.
The Bucks flew to New Orleans a day earlier than scheduled to avoid the storm, arriving on Monday evening. But the sheer amount of snow — as much as 10 inches — forced the visitors to cancel their practice scheduled for Tuesday at Tulane University, as well as their shootaround scheduled for Wednesday.
It was also uncertain whether the team would make it back to Milwaukee in time for their game Thursday against Miami. The Bucks will try to fly back to Milwaukee early enough in the day on Thursday to be back in time for the game. As of now, the league has not postponed Thursday’s game, which is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT in Milwaukee and is scheduled to be broadcast on TNT as part of the NBA’s Rivalry Week schedule.
The Pelicans might also have trouble making their next scheduled games in Memphis on Friday and in Charlotte on Sunday. For now, the Pelicans plan to fly out on Thursday.

The Sun Belt Conference, citing “hazardous travel conditions,” announced multiple changes to its men’s basketball schedule.
Two games scheduled for Wednesday — Georgia Southern’s game at home against Coastal Carolina and Louisiana-Lafayette’s home game against Texas State — were moved to Thursday.
In addition to that, a pair of games scheduled for Thursday were shifted to Monday. They were Southern Mississippi’s game at Troy (in Troy, Alabama) and South Alabama’s game at Louisiana-Monroe.
