Detroit Lions fans welcome back linebacker Alex Anzalone from injury
Linebacker Alex Anzalone returns to a big pop from Detroit Lions fans ahead of their game vs. the Minnesota Vikings on Jan. 5, 2025, at Ford Field.
The wait begins for the Detroit Lions.
Detroit clinched the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs after pulling away to handle the Minnesota Vikings 31-9 on Sunday night. With the win, the Lions finished 15-2 and atop the NFC standings to earn a first-round bye and homefield advantage until Super Bowl 2025.
The Lions have their first break in the schedule since a Week 5 bye, which will help them get healthy and tweak anything needed entering the final sprint.
The Lions will not know who they are playing until next weekend due to the NFL playoff structure. Since the playoff matchups are re-seeded after each round, Detroit will host the lowest-seeded team to advance out of the wild-card round in the divisional round.

Here is a quick look at the playoff picture and a prediction of how the next month will shake out leading up to Super Bowl 59 on Feb. 9 in New Orleans.
Yes, they can since they are one of 14 teams to make the 2024-25 NFL playoffs. They only have to win two games to make their first Super Bowl appearance, and three games to win it all.
Saturday: 5-seed Chargers at 4-seed Texans, 4:30, CBS; 6-seed Steelers at 3-seed Ravens, 8, Prime Video.
Sunday: 7-seed Broncos at 2-seed Bills, 1, CBS; 7-seed Packers at 2-seed Eagles, 4:30, Fox; 6-seed Commanders at 3-seed Buccaneers, 8, NBC.
Monday: 5-seed Vikings at 4-seed Rams, 8, ABC/ESPN.
Eagles beat the Packers: Green Bay’s defense is set up well to slow down Saquon Barkley with four straight games holding opponents under 100 yards rushing and Jordan Love should be healthy, but Philadelphia has more playmakers on both sides that’ll be the difference in a low-scoring game.
Buccaneers beat the Commanders: Rookie Jayden Daniels and the Commanders’ offense is fun and should find some success against Tampa Bay’s stingy defense, but the Bucs should slice through Washington with a healthy dose of run and play-action passing.
Rams beat the Vikings: The Rams averaged under 15 points in the past three games with their starters, but had one of their best offensive games of the season at home against Minnesota in Week 8 in a 30-20 win. Stafford and company should be well-rested and outlast the Vikings, who quickly need to find answers for Sam Darnold’s struggles on Sunday night against the Lions.
(If these outcomes happen, the Lions would play the Rams for the third time at Ford Field in the 12 months in a rematch of last year’s wild-card showdown. The Eagles would host the Buccaneers in the other divisional matchup.)
Bills beat Broncos: Josh Allen is one of the best football players alive and will have answers for Pat Surtain II and Denver’s stingy defense. Rookie Bo Nix has been a pleasant surprise at quarterback, but the cards are stacked against the Broncos making a deep playoff run.
Ravens beat Steelers: The Steelers lost five straight games to end the season to lose the AFC North to Baltimore. The Ravens ran over Pittsburgh a few weeks ago and should be able to do the same thing Saturday night.
Chargers beat Texans: The Texans have underwhelmed compared to their preseason expectations and do not have much momentum heading into the playoffs. The Chargers defense should be able to get pressure on C.J. Stroud, and Justin Herbert will make a few big-time throws to advance.
Lions beat Rams: The Rams will connect on a few big plays to Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp, but Detroit’s offense will not be slowed and will outscore Los Angeles in a shootout to set up the first NFC championship game hosted at Ford Field.
Eagles beat Buccaneers: Tampa Bay has won two straight over Philadelphia, including a dominating wild-card playoff game a year ago, but the Eagles defense — particularly the secondary — has improved enough to slow down Baker Mayfield. The offense again should find enough big plays through Barkley and A.J. Brown.
Chiefs beat Chargers: The Chargers are fun now under coach Jim Harbaugh, but the Chiefs are still the two-time defending champs. Their main starters will have rested for two weeks after skipping Week 18 and should come out with fire as they start their campaign to three-peat.
Ravens beat Bills: In a matchup between the top MVP candidates, Jackson will emerge on top with a road win. Baltimore smoked Buffalo at home, 35-10, in the first month of the season and has improved on defense enough to be able to slow down Allen and allow the offense to lean on Derrick Henry and the run.
Lions beat Eagles: The top two teams in the NFC finally meet. The Lions sell out to stop the run and give up a few big plays to Jalen Hurts in the air, but cause enough chaos to put the offense in a position to win it with a late fourth-quarter drive.
Ravens beat Chiefs: The Ravens finally get it done. After losing at Kansas City at home in the same round a year ago, the combination of Henry and Jackson breaks through the Chiefs defense to outscore Patrick Mahomes late.
Ravens beat Lions: The Lions finally get to the biggest stage in sports in Super Bowl 59, but cannot complete the magical season. A legendary performance from Jackson rewrites the NFL narrative of him and the Ravens being unable to get it done in the postseason, winning the franchise’s third Super Bowl and first in 12 years.
Wild-card round: Jan. 11-13.
Divisional round: Jan. 18-19.
Conference championships: Jan. 26.
Super Bowl 59: Feb. 9 in New Orleans.
The Lions are the favorites entering the playoffs to win their first Super Bowl. They are listed on BetMGM at +280, meaning a $10 bet on the Lions would net $28 profit if they win, plus the $10 back. Here are the BetMGM odds as of Monday afternoon:
The Lions will play either Saturday, Jan. 18 or Sunday, Jan. 19 in the divisional round at Ford Field in Detroit. Tickets are still available. The date and time will be determined by next Monday night.
