Watch: Dylan Harper makes his Rutgers basketball debut during introductions
Rutgers basketball has another major challenge ahead of it, and it’s unclear whether the Scarlet Knights will be without star freshman point guard Dylan Harper.
Harper has been battling a high ankle sprain that he suffered in Rutgers’ loss at Penn State on Jan. 20, and his availability for the Scarlet Knights’ game against No. 23 Illinois on Wednesday night at Jersey Mike’s Arena remains to be seen.
The availability report will be released approximately three hours before tip-off.
He attempted to play Jan. 25 against Michigan State at Madison Square Garden – he didn’t start but came off the bench and ultimately was only able to play 13 minutes (he finished with six points) as Rutgers lost 81-74.
But Harper hasn’t played since, missing a win over Northwestern on the road and a home loss to Michigan.
Coach Steve Pikiell has said Harper is doing everything possible to return.
It’s been tough few weeks for Harper, who also recently battled a bad case of the flu that cost him time.
In 19 games Harper is averaging 18.6 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.1 assists while shooting 48.8 percent from the field.
Rutgers is already facing a steep uphill climb to turn this season around – and to say the Scarlet Knights are running out of time is an understatement with nine-regular season games remaining.
