LITCHFIELD PARK, Arizona – The ACU Wildcats will go into Wednesday’s final round of the Bowling Green State Invitational women’s golf tournament tied with UETP for the team lead after the Miners and Wildcats each shot 38-over-par over the first two rounds of the tournament at the Wigwam Resort Blue Course.
ACU’s Ryann Honea, ranked 86th in the country in women’s Division I golf, leads the individual standings by three strokes over Nawel Ben Letaief of UTEP. Honea, the reigning Western Athletic Conference champion, shot back-to-back rounds of 1-over-par 72 on Tuesday to finish the day at 2-over-par. Letaief shot rounds of 6-over-par and 1-under-par to finish the day at 5-over-par 147, three shots back of Honea.
Sydney Williams is in 12th place for the Wildcats at 10-over-par 152 after back-to-back rounds of 5-over-par 76 on the 6,000-yard, par-71 layout. Manon Guille is tied for 24th overall at 13-over-par after rounds of 77-78, and Jiyu Han and Marissa Loya are tied for 27th after each finished the first two rounds at 14-over-par 156.
Honea started her opening round on No. 4 and parred the 156-yard par-3 before carding four straight bogeys to go to 4-over-par through five holes. But she parred No. 9 and birdied 10 before bogeys at 11 and 13 left her at 5-over-par with eight holes to play. She birdied 14 and 15 before parring 16, 17, and 18. She birdied the 511-yard, par-5 first to get to 2-over, and birdied the 207-yard par-3 second to get to 1-over-par. She finished at No. 3 with a par.
The second round was tamer for the ACU junior as she started with three straight pars before going birdie-bogey-birdie-par-par-par-par to get to No. 13 at 1-under-par. She birdied 14 to get to 2-under-par before a double-bogey dropped her back to even-par. She bogeyed 16 before recording three straight pars to go into her final two holes at 1-over-par. She bogeyed No. 2 before finishing with a birdie on No. 3 for a round of 1-over-par 72.
The Wildcats and Miners lead Weber State, Northern Illinois, and Idaho (all at plus-39) for the top spot in the team standings. Bowling Green is in sixth, 10 shots back at 49-over-par. Wednesday’s final round will start at 9 a.m. (CT).
