If you’re in the market for some new golf irons, you are in luck, because I think this week is the best time ever to buy a new set. Here’s why…

1. The most aggressive Black Friday sales ever

If you take the plunge this week, you can take advantage of the best Black Friday golf deals to find some massive savings on golf irons.

With lots of competition online and consumers now savvy to the old tricks retailers used to use – like manipulating prices in the run-up to Black Friday to make discounts look much bigger than they actually were, etc – shops have been driven to offer extremely aggressive prices this year.

We’ve found discounts as high as 50% on offer.

But it’s not just the Black Friday golf deals that make this week such a good time to buy golf irons…

2. It’s the perfect time of year to switch irons

In my experience, when you buy a new driver, wedges, or putter, the on-course improvements are immediate.

With a driver, it probably goes further and/or offers more forgiveness than your old one, which is why you bought it. You don’t really need to get used to that extra distance, because on holes where you’re hitting driver you generally want it to go as far as possible.

New wedges are great because the fresh grooves spin so much more than worn ones.

And a new putter is normally a fresh start from whatever struggles you’d been having with your old one that compelled you to replace it.

But golf irons take a bit of getting used to. They probably look a bit different behind the ball to your previous set, the launch window might be slightly higher or lower, and, perhaps most importantly, the yardages will almost certainly be a little (or a lot) different to what you’re used to.

If you get new irons in the main golf season, it will take you at least a few rounds – potentially a lot more – to really get used to them. If you buy irons now, you can do all that work over the winter and start the new golf season next year with a set you know inside out.

3. You’re not missing anything

One of the reasons manufacturers discount golf clubs towards the end of the year is because most will be releasing new lines in the early part of the following year. When the new kit comes out, people are less likely to buy the past generation clubs, so manufacturers are looking to clear inventory ahead of time.

But the thing is, golf iron technology really doesn’t change much from one year to the next. I’d be astonished if you bought a set now and then, come February, a new set was released offering such game-changing improvements that you wished you’d waited.

Not convinced? Try to think when the last time a benchmark set or irons was released… Not easy, is it? I’d say maybe the original TaylorMade P790, but that was in 2017.

Will there be some lovely new irons released in 2025? Absolutely.

Will any of them be so amazing they make a set you buy today obsolete? I highly doubt it.

If you had a driver that’s five years old, I’d say you’re probably giving up a bit of performance compared to the latest models. With irons, I’m not sure I could say the same. Remember, many tour pros keep irons for several years. They have access to the latest equipment and the world’s leading club fitters. Their livelihood depends on their on-course performance. And they’re still not fussed about switching irons every year. Makes you think.

Golfers with slow swing speeds who want easy launch and plenty of forgiveness will love the TaylorMade Stealth HD irons. Sure, they’re not the sleekest-looking things, but that extra size in the head inspires confidence and really packs a punch.

Mizuno make arguably the best golf irons in the business. Their designs are timeless and many great golfers have Mizuno irons in the bag that are decades old, while many non-contract pros choose Mizuno irons over any other brand.

The Mizuno Pro 223 quickly became one of the best players’ golf irons when it launched and the replacement model (the Mizuno Pro 243) is a great iron but not enormously different, meaning the 223 is a great option if you want to save a bit of cash.
