Georgia quarterback Carson Beck entered the transfer portal Thursday with a “do not contact” tag, as 247Sports‘ Chris Hummer and Matt Zenitz reported, and became the 2025 cycle’s new No. 1 player. Linked to Miami as an ideal fit, Beck takes the top spot over former Washington State quarterback John Mateer, who received the ranking after entering the transfer portal Dec. 16 and landing with Oklahoma two days later.
In 27 games as Georgia’s starting quarterback from 2023-24, Beck completed 592 of 865 passes (68.4%) for 7,426 yards and 52 touchdowns to 18 interceptions. He rounded out his production with five rushing touchdowns.
Beck has a 95 grade. We see him with a Round 2 NFL Draft ceiling. His game fits pro-style offenses as a very comfortable drop-back passer with nice range for the deep ball.
When Beck has played at his very best, there’s first-round chatter — many had him as the top overall quarterback entering the 2024 season. Beck has the advanced football IQ and ownership at the line of scrimmage to get into advantage plays. He has the ball acceleration on his throws to hit tight windows and work the middle of the field.
That said, Beck had a rough patch this season where his stock dipped from constantly forcing the ball into coverage in many key situations and his turnover-worthy-play rate increased from 2.3% (2023) to 3.8% (2024).
Beck isn’t a quarterback with much off-script ability and evasive capacity although he’s not a statue. We fully expect Beck to learn from these mistakes and have a comeback year in 2025 if he’s in an offense that plays to his strengths.
We are giving the edge to Beck over Mateer in the rankings because of how Beck’s game translates to the NFL. He can see the field with his 6-foot-4, 230-pound frame and consistently make advanced-level throws look routine. He’s played in an NFL offense at Georgia against great competition and won a very high percentage of his games.

Beck can beat the blitz with his arm and coverage knowledge, as well as completing a very high clip of throws 20-plus yards downfield. The rhythm and timing on his short-to-intermediate throws are NFL quality.
